Re: Paying back company relocation fees

Most professional fixed term relocation contracts should have a clause to the effect that if the employer terminates the contract prior to the end of the term (other than for gross misconduct), then...

Re: Paying back company relocation fees

They will expect the money back in one go. BUT (this is important) you can have it taken from your GROSS salary. If you still owed them anything, then you'd have to repay this. This is completely...

Re: Housing crash in London - when will it recover?

I'd totally agree with this; it is a prudent option. Try to switch to interest only - it won't matter for a couple of years. On the other hand you need to be pretty confident you can rent your place...

Re: News in OZ versus news in U.K

I don't think that is niaive. It is very healthy and rational. You are just counter-balancing the disproportionate reporting by being selective about what you expose yourself to. It's not as if...

Re: The first mistake in the bible!

Didn't the mystery woman hail from Nod? Not sure how this woman came about. Either this, or Eve had daughters and, well, we needn't go further. Remember though that it is only relatively recently...

Re: You might not be planning to return but.....

Hi J&R

Out of interest, do you know if Aus has a similar policy to the UK wrt returnees and uni fees? Perhaps I should know working in that sector...but I don't!

I've signed the petition but...

Re: Sydney Life??

We've lived in and around Southamtpn (though I'm a Northerner), and now in Sydney, for a second time. First, it is about 100 times better than Southampton city. But that's not a very fair comparison...

Re: Boring Canberra

Those who slate Canberra are generally no those who live there. The people I know that have lived there reckon it is a good lace, especially for a young family. From what I've heard though it's not...

Re: UK crime falling

You family did well to recover from the loss of a functioning father in that way. I can't imagine it.

And on the other hand a properly reformed ex-criminal can be the nicest people you could meet,...

Re: Good areas to live in England.

I'm from Manchester and can relate to what you are saying. I love Manchester but would never live there again. We moved to a village between Southampton and Portsmouth, on the river Hamble. Nice...

Re: UK crime falling

Yes I see what you mean now. Education would have worked for the likes of me and hopefully many others. I was in a good family and got an education anyway and that was enough. The hardcore,...

Re: UK crime falling

Yes, a young, scared person with a weapon is one of the most dangerous types of person, especially if intoxicated or with a group of others. But education isn't anywhere near enough to change it....

Re: UK crime falling

Very true. Police stats are almost worthless as criteria change constantly. Probably the best stats are survey types - British Crime Survey, UNESCO survey, WHO survey, but the latter two tend to...

Re: UK crime falling

Not rubbish for those living there. Try saying that to people living in places I've lived, in several parts of Liverpool and Manchester. I was lucky enough to be able to leave. Moving to Bournemouth...

Re: UK crime falling

I'd agree totally. So much crime and disorder has its roots in alcohol, which alters judgement severely. For a younger person it is worse as they often don't know when to stop in a fight of some...

Re: UK crime falling

Trouble is the British Crime Survey doesn't survey people under 16. In my experience of living in Liverpool and Manchester at least, the age group of 11 - 17 was the worst in terms of the fear of the...

Re: House prices and the media....

It does feel very similar here though to how the UK felt 8 months ago. My feeling is that Australia is on the cusp. Affordability is the worst in the world - it can only go on for so long. We're...

Re: House prices and the media....

The big newspapers in Australia are vested interests because thy also operate housesearch websites, which generate huge advertising revenue. House price fall stories would have their clients up in...

Re: One Year back in the UK: My Reflections

I have thought about the US (New England, Portlandm, Washington) in the past but could not cope with the 2 weeks off. Is it pretty much standard, even in Universities I wonder? I think 4 weeks off is...

Re: One Year back in the UK: My Reflections

Parts of Australia (and I guess the US, and the UK) can be very dull, and sometimes this may be more about a time of life (with a toddler I found UK village life much more boring than Australia beach...

Re: Back to Oz for the 2nd time

All a bit too spot on. Much easier I think for childless people as there is tons to do in the uk from their perspective.

I relate to the swing issue! The local parks here are fantastic so no need...

Stacks of us have done it! There are hoards of second timers in Australia. There are a lot on the MCTTUK forum but many don't publicly admit coming back here as it can be dynamite...but they do PM....

Re: Will this make leaving harder?

Avoid airport scenes at all costs. They can be horrific and can ruin the journey and arrival.

Re: Credit Card Debt

1. If I saw someone drop it - yes, definitely. If it was just blowing in the wind - probably not. It would be near impossible to trace the owner and would take me well out of my way to find a police...
