Re: Car import

I shipped a car twice with Pickfords. They provided an almost door-to-door service for the car (pick up in the UK, drop off at their depot in Jo'burg) and took care of all the paperwork, clearing...

Re: Safety in SA - three babies under 3

Thought you'd just slip that one in, did you Ed? - Leader of the Pack kind of thing, just in case we thought you were getting old and staid. You're such a poseur.

Re: Safety in SA - three babies under 3

The bottom line is that SA just isn't as safe as the UK. You have to accept that if you go there.

As it happens I know Kosmos at Hartbeespoort. Nice, pretty place, though perhaps a bit cut off....

Re: SPOUSE OF SA CITIZEN - WHICH VISA

Well I'm sorry to offend, if I have offended. You may be right that I have missed, or misunderstood, your original post. I'm not quite sure which is the original.

My understanding was that you do...

Re: SPOUSE OF SA CITIZEN - WHICH VISA

Yes, it is frustrating. And what Ed and Martyn tell you about the lunatic inconsistency of the official advice is spot on. However, you can see too that the authorities might suspect you are trying...

Re: Thinking of moving our family to South Africa

There is a regular poster on this site called Ededed who will probably pop up and give you some good advice. He has done the whole journey, physically and emotionally.

I mean no offence when I say...

Re: Relocating to South Africa

The short answer is that it will be pretty much impossible unless there are other factors you haven't mentioned that make you somehow indispensible to the South African economy.

Ededed is more...

Re: South Africa - Bill Keller

It's the classic path of tyranny to involve and co-opt as many as possible in the corruption and crimes. With the president a posterboy for corruption and rape, what else can we expect?

Are you...

Re: Time to return?

Fair enough. Personally I'd choose naive rather than the hackneyed 'optimistic' - another of those good-newsy tropes that Homecoming Revolution likes to trot out.

I've seen too many people try...

Re: Time to return?

Reminds me of the Homecoming Revolution propaganda. Vague, selective semi-facts, designed to tug at the heartstrings of the weak and unhappy and homesick. An appeal to that terrible self-deceiving...

Re: South Africa - Bill Keller

Still here, Ed, still watching the unfolding tragedy with pained intermittent interest. As I said some time ago, the game's up for SA. They blew it.

Re: Renting / Letting your UK home from South Africa

Re: Move to Cape Town - Advice Needed!

Well you could try Sea Point itself I suppose, or look west to Green Point, or east along the Atlantic seaboard (Camps Bay etc), or over the hill into the city (Tamboerskloof etc).

It depends what...

Re: Black empowerment?

I suppose you heard Ed, as was widely reported on the BBC, that the SABC edited out the booing that Zuma received from its coverage of the 'Madiba' shambles.

As for the hapless signer (who now...

If others want to avoid this kind of thing, I recommend using your UK debit and/or credit...
