Re: Can we bring specialty food in checked luggage?

After a 2 week UK visit over Thanksgiving, we took the opportunity to buy Xmas goodies from M&S, including the biggest Xmas pudding they sold.

Flying from Cardiff to Houston via Amsterdam, we...

Re: Moving to the mountains

"Lousy" pay is relative. For Boise, what I have decided is that I would take a 30% drop in salary to get back there for the improvement in the quality of life it affords over Houston.

Money isn't...

Re: Moving to the mountains

It's not just there. Even in Houston most of the the applicants I get are nowhere near qualified for the advertised position, and the ones that look good on paper (screen?) that I do interview have...

Re: Moving to the mountains

I agree, and I have done that, but finding the specific hiring manager in a company the size of BP or Exxxxxon on LinkedIn is nigh on impossible . . . but yes, I still agree the direct approach is...

Re: Moving to the mountains

How do you actually get a job with an oil company if you don't already work in that industry?!

I've been the perfect candidate (obviously) for so many positions, but once I get to the "How many...

Re: Moving to the mountains

Welshman here . . . I agree completely - Boise is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. I lived there for 4 years working at HP (2001-2005), and I've been trying desperately to get back...

Re: Commuting in Katy / Houston

Hello!

I work at Baylor and I've been commuting from The Woodlands to the Med Center (45 miles) for 4 years, so although I can't comment on the Katy commute, I definitely agree that the Med Center...

Re: Should we take our Dog with us to SoCal

Oh OK, I see.

Sorry, it was supposed to be humourous along the lines of "have <insert anything really> will travel" . . . Google the have will travel phrase and you'll see what I mean

Re: Should we take our Dog with us to SoCal

We shipped (flew) our 2 year old RSPCA mutt to Idaho in 2001 . . . then to Australia in 2004 . . . and then to Texas in 2005.

He's now 12 and still going strong . . . and if we move...

Re: New to the Woodlands, Houston, TX,

That's a can of worms....but in a nutshell.....lived/worked in Idaho for 5 years, loved every minute of it, but because of the threats of being laid-off and not having a green card at the time, I...

Re: Police clearance in two countries?

A US consular office will be able to do it, but in my opinion it will be much easier to get a couple of sets done before you leave. I don't think your fingerprint expire ;-) only the FBI clearance...

Re: Police clearance in two countries?

We had to get FBI clearence from the US and UK (we're Brits, but moved to Australia from the US). The FBI check is basically a fingerprint check, so you have to go get fingerprinted (local police...

Re: The Biggest Miseries - Australian's or Brit's???

Yes, Brits are definitely more pessimistic, which goes hand in hand with misery. The three weeks we've been in the UK in the past 5 years were so depressing.

The "you can do anything you want to...

Re: Australian or Pom?

I can relate to the State thing. I lived in Boise, Idaho for 4 years (120,000 people, 3 surnames). Nearest major city is either Seattle or Salt Lake, both about 800 miles away. Insular is not the...

Re: Australian or Pom?

I've seen a lot of ignorance about countries other than your own, maybe due to this kind of reporting, especially in the US. I lost count of the number of times I've had to explain that I'm from...

Re: Australian or Pom?

This kind of reporting is takien to the extreme in the US. In the olympics you would only get the report of where the US contestant finished and no mention of who won! Drove me crazy.

I could...
