My other half is very concerned that it won't be a good idea to take our beloved pup with us (he's not a pup anymore!lol). The concern is for a number of reasons:

Cali state law seems to prohibit dogs in many of the state parks - i.e. some parks say 'dogs allowed' so does this mean he is not allowed in the other parks at all or only on a leash? He loves to run around (not wildly like an untrained dog) and needs that exercise.

Also we would like to understand typical dog walking costs in LA - given the hours we will be keeping at the office he may need 2 walks a day whilst we are out.

We know that some of the places we would like to live accept pets - he is not a massive lab but some places say 'small dogs ok'. What on earth is a 'small dog' - toy poodle? Are dog friendly rentals in decent neighbourhoods impossible?

Is the heat a problem for dogs?

Any other issues we should consider or are we just worrying too much?

Just send him to doggy day camp a couple of times a week.

Dogs are required to be on a leash most public places in the US. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21305

That's what I hate the sound of- a leash - all the time - in every bloody park - everywhere. That's no life for a field dog.

Has anyone taken their dog and found themselves frustrated by the restrictive nature of the law surrounding dogs in California?

And I thought the Marley & Me thing was a one off!!

Are all the film stereotypes from American films completely true?? Does Arnold really walk around LA shooting the place up when he is not doing governer type things?

Then it seems your choice is clear: your dog will be happier to remain in England. Problem solved!

England has to be the worlds most dog friendly place - there is no where else in the world like it. We moved from orange county, ca to the uk for 3 years and our dog couldn't have been happier, pubs, country side, woods, beachs, no where was off limits. My hubby moved back to orange county in february with our dog (i'm on my way, had to finish up getting my visa, etc) and whilst it is literally the opposite of where we lived in the UK (Devon, in the country) our dog is a huge part of our life, and we couldn't be without him! there are lots of parks that are dog friendly, but you have to research it. there are also dog beaches, again, you have to research it. we have also been known to disregard the rules for dogs on leash and let our dog run off leash - if no one else is around.... I think it depends on how much you want your dog with you - if there is a home in the UK and you know he'll be just as happy, and you're happy with it, that makes sense.

Considering the large amount of dogs in California, I would say the heat is not an issue, and having been in San Diego for 25 years of my life, I would not consider So. California hot unless your in the inland valleys or desert.

Some city's have off leash area's where it is indeed legal to have your dog off leash, this will vary city by city however.

San Diego for example: http://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-rec...eashfree.shtml

A list for various places in So. California.

http://www.hautedogs.org/offleash.html (this website plays an annoying music, so might want to turn off speakers)

There are places where dogs can be off leash.

Personally I would think the dog would be more distressed losing his mum and dad then been brought out to a new climate enviroment.....I would never part with my dogs or any of my cats it would never even be a option.

Well I don't know too much about other European countries but France is actually more dog friendly than the UK. Dogs are allowed in the old-fashioned types of pubs in the UK, drinking/country pubs, but not the foodie/chain kind of pub. I personally think that is a pity, I don't mind people bringing dogs into pubs.

Now in France dogs are allowed in nearly all restaurants and cafes, and you'll frequently see ladies with their small dogs sitting on their laps being fed titbits from their own meal.
