Re: Buying a car

It's quieter on the roads at night of course, but personally I prefer doing as much of it in daytime as possible. Beware the 4am dip!

If they'll take all your animals on the Bilbao ferry maybe...

Re: Buying a car

I'll thank you not to assume or judge, or to quote fanciful supposition about insurance. People are different. Some people find driving stressful and exhausting. Fortunately I don't, especially on...

Re: Buying a car

Used to do 1400km (plus channel crossing) UK to Italy in a day, but slacking off these days, did an overnight stop for 1900km Portugal to Italy recently ;)

Re: Buying a car

Stick on a set of these, that'll be fine (and legal) for travel: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Travel-Products-Travelspot-Eurolites-N92160/dp/B001P5SPJW

Worth asking your local dealer while you are in...

Re: Buying a car

Ah, in that case I think you have a plan!

You'll still need to start the import process when you get here, but you'll be able to claim the tax exemption as a new resident:...

Re: Buying a car

Also, just to throw in another option (sorry, trying to help, not confuse!) you can get longer term rentals: https://www.xtracars.pt/en/

It's a bit expensive, but might be worth it for a few...

Re: Buying a car

Ah, you make a good point on those Portugal regs being EU countries!

UK Gov site says 183 days is still OK if visiting Portugal as a tourist (though doesn't give a link to Portuguese confirmation...

Re: Buying a car

Meanwhile, on the Portuguese side of things, you can use your UK car for up to six months without going through the PT import/registration process but only until you become a PT resident, as soon as...

Re: Buying a car

If you are not a UK RESIDENT (citizen is irrelevant) then you can drive a foreign registered car in the UK for up to six months
But you need to be careful - just because you become PT resident, you...

Re: Buying a car

The reason for the post deletion by mods is that it's illegal for a UK resident to drive a foreign registered car in the UK

But you *might* be able to rent a car in Porto to drive to the UK and...

Re: NIF

There was a public holiday on Thursday and then a Lisbon holiday on the Monday, so a lot of people took a day of holiday and had a long weekend, likely that does slow things down. You'll get used to...

Re: NIF

Hard to say, it seems that you are using a private company to do the application for you, but you don't say which one. I'd guess that the delay is mostly due to their process, it's fast to get the...

Re: Buying a car

Have a look at mobile.de (it lists cars in France too) and see what you think vs standvirtual.pt

Pricing and availability differences depend on the model, age etc. For the cars we were looking at,...

Re: Buying a car

Yes, that's correct, if you want to take advantage of the special import exception for new residents. But the taxes can be not too bad, so I was suggesting doing it as just a normal import.

If the...

Re: Buying a car

Would need a bit of careful time coordination, but buying a car in Germany or France, driving it down and importing it to Portugal is worth a thought, it could be the cheapest option. Some info on...

Re: 180 day travel insurance and residence Insurance

Check the conditions on your travel insurance - often it's only valid for trips of 30, 60 or 90 days. If it's valid for longer periods then it should be OK, otherwise you will need a separate...

Re: 180 day travel insurance and residence Insurance

Sorry, it's a little hard to understand your question, can you clarify?

What do you mean by "residence insurance"? Are you talking about health insurance?

What's your concern - whether you will...
