Re: Anyone still feel like an outsider?

Close friends are harder to find as one gets older. Regardless of location. In general, public mood in Canada is a heck of a lot more welcoming to immigrants than in the UK.

Re: Existing pension in UK

You need to look at the Income Tax Act. UK (and other foreign) pensions fall under the definition of the "exempt trust". https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/I-3.3/section-233.3-20130626.html and...

Re: Existing pension in UK

There will be no implications in terms of tax until you start drawing.

Many UK SIPPs limit participation by Canadian residents but if you are already with the scheme then you should be...

Re: Existing pension in UK

Not required. Pension plans fall under an exception from T1135 reporting.

Re: UK Pensions

The point about people not saving for retirement and then costing the taxpayer is true but that’s not why UK restricts transfers of pensions abroad. Someone living in Canada is very unlikely to...

Re: UK Pensions

All of this is a matter of opinion. “Protection from yourself” = nanny state making decisions for you. Like allowing transfer to just 3 Canadian providers, all of them offering poor choice of...

Re: Financial Advisor recommendation for UK expat in Canada??

You might get more specific feedback on a financial forum, like this one: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/pensions-annuities-retirement-planning

That forum has several expats as...

Re: EXCHANGE RATE

The rate rise was anticipated and therefore already priced in the value of currency and the market. This morning's reaction will have been in response to anticipated next moves and yesterday's rally...

Re: Technical question about tax and UK pension

Believe there is a way to pay a small fee and get CRA to make a formal judgement before making the withdrawal. Might be worth it.

Re: EXCHANGE RATE

Probably. We just don’t know when. CAD/GBP ratio is positively correlated to the price of oil and other commodities. They are cyclical. High right now.

Re: UK Company Pension lump sum in Canada

This is a fairly complex situation. Might be a way to ask HMRC; not sure. CRA does allow you to ask questions like this.

Lump sum withdrawals from UK pensions might be eligible for being added...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Zelenskyy singled out UK for his praise. Its true, Britain seems to be punching above its weight and has provided more military help than most. They are in the process of providing “new type of...

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

Its cruel to talk about teeth in the presence of a Brit. Can’t believe a Canadian would do it. They are too nice.

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

Never happens. That’s why British teeth are SO much better than Canadian. Brits are famous for perfect teeth. We need to reproduce their model.

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

Because this happens to all government run services. Demand grows, resources are limited, this leads to inflation, government tries to control costs so inflation shows in deteriorating quality,...

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

Given the Liberal-NDP coalition announced today, I am raising my expectations for inflation for the next few years. I think that 5% to 9% is realistic over the next few years.

I also expect the...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

There are a few reasons. Some of these arguments are a replay of 1980s when Germans built a pipeline from USSR and the Reagan administration argued that it would make Europe dependent on the whims of...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

We all hope so. Apparently Putin is hiding in an underground city in Siberia right now. Losing this war will be a problem for Putin as he relies on the chauvinist support. Won’t go well with his...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Very much depends on the nuclear weapon. If we take a larger Russian SSBN it may carry 200 warheads (say 10 per missile). Hiroshima/Nagasaki = 15 kt yield per bomb. Each warhead may have a punch of...

Re: Taking a yearly Pension from UK Company??

My understanding is that UK will not tax the withdrawals as long as you complete the right forms. Might be missing something but doing this could be counterproductive. You would lose your RRSP...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

“Bully” does not begin to describe it. Putin is bombing cities of a peaceful sovereign democratic nation. Again but on a larger scale. Putin is a war criminal.

Good thing we are helping...
