Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Yes. It used to be deducted from the denominator in the calculation, but is now added to the numerator, which makes you eligible, and is more favorable. Don't feel uncomfortable applying- you're just...

Re: Best way to recoup tax withheld on UK pension lump sum

Whenever I got refunds it was always by bank deposit. I got an email each June with this message:"Your latest tax calculation is now ready to view online.

Sign in to HMRC online with your...

Re: Wise.com - New verification Process

Same here. When I tried to transfer my pension payment I was required to enter my SS number and take a photo of my ID (driving license) and of myself with my cell phone, which I did. There was no...

Re: DV-2025 is open to anybody born in the UK!

Re: US Visa query

Yes, true for the UK.
Some other nationalities take less persuasion.

May be more like 50 years as the trend of wait time upwards may continue. So assuming they're 40, they may get to immigrate...

Re: Questions regarding Medicare

Do they send you an Explanation of Benefits each time you go to the doctor, or only if you go over the deductible?

I wanted to choose this plan but was worried that I would only hear from them in...

Re: Renewing UK passport from overseas - dual citizen

Yes. I used two notaries, neither would look at the original that I wanted to show them. They were only verifying my signature to my statement that it was a true copy.

Re: Renewing UK passport from overseas - dual citizen

Well what they do is good enough at least for some purposes- when I needed a certified copy (I can't remember what for) I was asked to write that it was a copy and sign, and the notary verified just...

Re: N400 Application concerns, please advise.

Yes, there's no 6 month rule for residence (I have also known people who've kept their residence for many years by visiting the US once a year, though not recently), but I expect the OP did this for...

Re: UK State Pension Increases.

Lucky you two! Mine has always got less than the announced rate whenever I've looked at it. I once phoned and asked why and they said that the announced increase only applied to the basic pension;...

Re: Transfering money from US to UK every month

It's just a trick that banks and others use to mislead customers- the exchange rate loading is obviously part of the fee; I don't know why they're allowed to say "no fee", you'd think customer...

I took a safe driving course recently to get a discount on my car insurance, and one of the sections was about roundabouts, and had statistics showing that roundabouts are FAR safer than stop...

Re: Options for UK Pension (Defined Contribution)

I do not know what the rules are now, but a few years ago I wanted to transfer my UK pension to the US, but was unable to do so. But I was able to transfer it to a UK SIPP which had a lower fee...

Re: Children and IRS tax return

I think by "sons and daughters" they mean those over 21, so there's no wait for children under 21 for citizens.

Re: Best way to return to the US?

Re: Best way to return to the US?

Not so.

With a Green Card you get a visa, without one you don't.

(Without a Green Card or similar foreign residence they assume that you're trying to leave your country and emigrate and are not...

Re: UK expat in the US - tax & reporting

It used to be possible to contribute for up to 5 years after leaving the UK. You paid around 2,800 pounds and 3,600 pounds went into your stakeholder pension. I don't know if it is still possible, or...

Re: US / UK Citizen Tax while living in the UK

I sent it by ordinary post. I didn't receive confirmation. (but I know they received it). You may want proof of delivery, in which case you might look on the IRS site to see what they say.
