Re: PERM: Company-sponsored vs Marriage

I was told by the attorney handling my case during the H1B renewal that things had been tightened up during the Trump administration, which is why the burden of 'proof of experience' was so much more...

Question PERM: Company-sponsored vs Marriage

Hi everyone,
I've been in the US on an L1B, then an H1B, for almost six years. My expiry is September 2023, and my current employer has been working with a law firm to support the ongoing renewals....

Re: Massachusetts salary?

$130k is certainly livable in Massachusetts. Don't live near Boston, the property prices are insane, as is the traffic.

For the first few years (I've been here 6) we lived in Queens, New York and...

Re: Where Do Y’All Get Your British Food From?

Ohh yes, absolutely!
My first Thanksgiving/Christmas combo was an eye opener ... and it didn't help that my girlfriend's family are Taiwanese. So Thanksgiving was a beautifully cooked turkey with...

Re: Where Do Y’All Get Your British Food From?

To me, Lays and Walkers are identical, just fewer flavors here to choose from.

I reeeeeally miss savory pies and good sausage rolls - finding the tinned/bottled stuff hasn't been so bad. There's...

Re: The Start of My Journey Home

This was an interesting read and also made me feel a bit emotional as I'm going back and forth with similar feelings.

I've been here about two and a half years, but still don't feel like I belong...

Re: Welsh & moving to NYC in Jan 2020 - advice?

I moved to NYC two years ago on $120k salary. My girlfriend was on something like ~$40k for six months which allowed us to furnish the apartment, but then lost her job.
We rented in Bayside in...

Another (hopefully quick) tax question

This is my second year in the US; my first year had my taxes done by PwC as part of the relocation package with my (now ex-) company but this year I strode out alone for my taxes. It wasn't as scary...

Re: iPhone / iTunes related question.

What they said^

Another thing to note is that if you have Apple Music, you have to cancel the subscription, wait for the end date of that subscription, and only then can you change your account to...

Re: Tips on best bank

HSBC were the only bank that would give me a credit card with a sensible credit limit ($10,000 to start, it's since been increased) based on my income rather than my (non-existent) US credit history....

Re: What did you take with you?

Great advice in here. Leave all electricals unless you can buy a US power supply for it or it can handle dual-voltage (I took computers, Sonos speakers, AppleTV, a Dyson ... that was it I think)....

Re: NY driving license

It's only a bad move if you get caught ;-)
I kept meaning to get around to it (been here just under 2 years) but drove so infrequently that it never became a priority. I got pulled over by a State...

Re: Building credit

I would definitely talk to your bank to start with.

I've had issues with 'missing credit scores'; I bank with HSBC and when signing up to CreditKarma, I had an Equifax score but no TransUnion...

Re: Cell Phone Number

You'll be fine giving them a UK number for the most part. Otherwise your wife might be able to get a corporate phone setup early and use that number?

I relocated from Surrey Quays (though I'm from...

Re: On an L1-B, another company wants me ...

Yeah, they're going to submit to the process and wait and see what happens - they're willing to wait until October if it gets approved.

Re: On an L1-B, another company wants me ...

Confirmed! This is exactly what they're intending on doing, so why they put down a start date of April 23rd I will never know. Right hand not talking to left hand I guess.

The company are going to transfer my L1-B to an H1-B, and have set my start date as 6 weeks from now to allow that process to...

Re: What are the BBC up to?

On topic, I wanted to see if I could get some Masterchef on iPlayer last night (answer: no) but using ExpressVPN worked a treat (Accessed on laptop, AirPlay to the TV).

Re: On an L1-B, another company wants me ...

They're going to give this 'little problem' over to HR to figure out. I won't be hearing back until early February anyway, so that gives them a few weeks to get creative within the confines...
