Re: UK passports - applying from US

So I spent an hour on hold yesterday to HM Passport Office - eventually spoke to a very helpful chap who explained what was going on.

One of the key dates for parental birth is 1 Jan 1983 as you...

Re: UK passports - applying from US

Thanks for your reply. I googled this several times previously, and from the government website (screenshot below), it looked like my parents didn’t have anything to do with whether I can pass my...

UK passports - applying from US

Hey everyone - it’s been ages since I was online - wanted to pick the excellent brains on here. My twin girls are 4 and were born in the US; I’m British by birth and their mum is Irish.

Might...

Making a will

Hi all- I couldn't find any posts on this; Mrs G and I have decided to make a will, but cannot work out the best way to go about it. We have assets (bank accounts and pension plans) in the UK &...

Re: International Auto Source

Confirm with them directly - but yes, they reimburse 30 days of rental per order (we had two rentals, one after the other - one for my finance deal, and one for my wife's lease).

Make sure they...

Re: International Auto Source

I'm afraid that with IAS, you need to order before arriving in the US. I'm not sure of any other options, but hey - at least you have the cash to buy a car in full; there are always other ways to...

Transferring money to individuals

I know there have been posts that have touched on this topic before - but I was curious as to how people here manage to transfer money to individuals within the US without either (a) it taking...

Re: Getting a SSN?

I'm pretty sure you have to order before arriving in the U.S. Can't hurt to call them up and ask though - http://www.intlauto.com. My experience has been v positive so far with them.

Re: Getting a SSN?

Short answer: you can't. At least not where car leasing/buying is concerned. I'm guessing you didn't set up a lease/finance arrangement with International Autosource before arriving in the US? That...

Re: Application for a social security card

I *think* that an L2 visa holder can apply for a SSN before the EAD arrives (on the rather confusing basis that the visa category entitles the holder the work, with DHS approval).

Happy to be...

Re: A Few LA Relocation questions: Driving, NHS, Insurance....

1. For a Drivers license, check your local state regulations - but in NC, I only needed to show that I'd applied for a SSN - you don't need either the actual SSN or an EAD to take your test/get your...

Re: A Few LA Relocation questions: Driving, NHS, Insurance....

Not sure of your specifics - but we were advised that you needed an EAD to get a job (agree you don't need it to get your SSN). One reading of the law is that you don't strictly need an EAS on an L2...

Re: A Few LA Relocation questions: Driving, NHS, Insurance....

Yes, the L2 entitles you to work (and therefore also to get a SSN), but it will have the 'only valid with DHS authorization' endorsement on it. That's why you also need the EAD.

Re: A Few LA Relocation questions: Driving, NHS, Insurance....

I'm not sure there's any formal requirement to do this, but I did ask for a full copy of my medical records before leaving - just to be on the safe side.

Re: Moving money to the US

I've just run into the same issue transferring Euros from my Irish (possibly the worst time ever to be doing this).

My bank was unfortunately fairly inflexible (aside from going into an Irish...

Re: SIM-only cell phone plans

I had thought that the label of 4G in the US was used to refer to 3G+ networks (eg Vodafone's EDGE network in the UK is an example of this).

4G LTE is the equivalent speed/technology in the US...

Weeellll... I kind of agree. If you asked me to argue the other side though, I'd say that (in the case of the BBC) the British TV License/tax-payers ultimately end up footing a great proportion of...

Re: Great British Bake Off??!!

There's a number of sites, for example https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/ - which allow subscribers to plug in a virtual DNS into their devices/routers. The cost is usually pretty minimal - max $5/month,...

On a recent mileage reward trip, I resorted to focusing on individual sectors of the journey - getting the long-haul sectors locked down with avios, and then worst case having to pay for the...

Re: SIM-only cell phone plans

We used Simple Mobile for the first month, before getting set up on a contract. It was $40/month, and better value than the main carriers (2GB data, unlimited domestic calls).

It depends what you...

Re: Paid holidays/Annual leave in the USA?

I was surprised at how many of my new colleagues routinely don't take their full entitlement. In my firm (financial services) at my level, the entitlement is 25 days + public holidays, but...
