UK Phones work but at GBP 1.85 per minute (depending on network provider) so a local Sim card is always better but you will need an Iqama to purchase one, although some providers will do it with...

I am in an area called golden belt which seems to cover a lot of compounds etc, I am not in a compound but in a large apartment close to most amenities.

Have been here a week and am currently in the Rezayat (where the food is OK, best I can say about it really) and am waiting on my iqama before I can sort out...
