Re: Moving to Mallorca & opening business

Is there a market for this type of business in Mallorca? Have you researched it? If there are none there currently, is there a reason for that?

Re: Costs of running TV in Spain

The TV will be somewhere between 80 - 140w and the Humax probably about 60-100w so call it 200w. 200w an hour approximately.

I don't know what the current electricity tariffs are in Spain, but I'd...

Re: NIE status and taxes

NIE is just a tax number, it doesn't make you liable for anything.

However, if you've been there 6 months or more than 183 days, you've de facto become a Spanish tax resident and are now liable...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

The poll tax was about the only sensible, rational policy Thatcher ever came up with.

What's wrong with getting everyone to pay for local services that they all use? If you live in the area, you...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

That's probably because you didn't have to experience the 12-14% mortgage interest rates under Thatcher.

Interest rates I might add that the mortgage borrowers of today simply couldn't get their...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

Yes.

I've been fortunate enough to have holidayed in Spain from a very young age, not long after Franco died and Spain really opened up to tourism on a big scale.

I can still remember a bottle...

Re: Buying a house in Mallorca

It's almost impossible to say as it depends on so many variable factors. Some houses are priced realistically, many aren't.

I often feel a rent ratio to capital value is a good yardstick to use...

Re: Austerity in Spain

Improved in what way? Debt come down? Or is it because house prices in certain areas have increased? The bottom line is this—this country has the same amount of debt or higher than it did this time...

Re: Austerity in Spain

That's because economic recovery isn't taking place, although the politicians want you to think it is. It's all smoke and mirrors yet again. A zero point x increase in GDP output is meaningless...

Re: what bills

Yes buildings too but he'd need to check on what insurance the Comunidad has in place for buildings. Liability insurance is often an add on worth considering too.

Re: what bills

As others have said, IBI (local council tax), Basura (rubbish collection) and Comunidad (community of owners) maintenance charges for common parts. Those are the three main ones.

On top of those...

Re: buying in spain - solicitor?

There is no 'best or quickest' method. The only way is through a lot of hard work over a period of time.

I think duolingo (http://www.duolingo.com/) is a really good way to get started in Spanish....

I'm not sure why you would be shot down in flames for asking what must be considered a very pertinent question.

The answer I'm afraid to say is simple political expediency. You know how that...
