I think most passports are printed at one central (contract) location so they come from a different place than the old one being sent back.

The currency conversion is not done by the local bank. It is done by the UK government at commercial rates and is therefore normally an excellent deal.

On what basis are you saying this? The children are UK citizens therefore they cannot get an ETA without lying on the application. Getting past the airline check-in with just an Australian passport...
