Re: Tips wanted for TEFL teaching work in Palma de Mallorca

If that were true, it would most certainly contravene EU law.

Re: Tips wanted for TEFL teaching work in Palma de Mallorca

Native Spanish & Catalan speakers have an advantage over native English speakers in the English teaching market? That strikes me as more than a little odd.

In Barcelona last year I never met a...

Buying a car, non resident

Hi,

A friend and I are planning on buying a (fairly crappy, old-ish) car to participate in the Mongol Rally this year. Having spent quite a bit of time in Barcelona - and having a number of local...

Re: Shipping a few boxes BCN -> Australia?

Hmmm.. source? UPS et al quote more like 900€.

It really seems like there is no service available matching what we need; either expensive air freight for a few boxes, or "we pack your whole...

Shipping a few boxes BCN -> Australia?

We've accumulated a bit of stuff on our wanderings through Spain that we'd like to send back to Aus. Let's say ~85kg worth that we could fit in 4 large-ish boxes (61x48x44 seems to be a standard...

Re: Use Of VISA - Dynamic Currency Conversion

I'd recommend you charge it back via your credit card company. You contracted a service to a specific EUR value, not a "similar" GBP value. They've made a charge that you didn't authorize.

I've...

Re: Exchange rate with Currencies Direct

I'd be careful with this strategy.

The critical question is: Do you want to be a currency speculator? If not, I'd recommend just making regular transfers as needed so your "effective rate" over...

Are autonomo charges a deductible expense?

i.e. do they reduce your taxable income for the year by the amount you've paid?

Thanks

Re: Do you HAVE to get Residency in Spain to work?

(edit) oh you said "for over 3 months". Then yes you do have to.

Nice, easy to understand summary of EU law here:...

Re: Working In Barcelona

Presumably he has dual nationality. I have both Aus and Brit passports. Quite common in the colonies, don't yer know!

I'm in Barcelona ATM, and many (most?) of the expats I meet here are working...

Re: Civil residency - how to prove how many days...

Definitely República Checa... "every single shit any government come up with" sounds exactly like what a certain Czech woman I know would say ;-)

Re: Moving to Valencia (NIE)

OK OK calm down ;-) It's an NIE. OK it's not green, it's white, but it definitely has a slight green tinge to it!

Re: Moving to Valencia (NIE)

Just to add to some confusion, the NIE is now issued on a green, A4 sheet. At least, that's what I have at the moment. Well I think it's only an NIE - whatever it is it didn't require proof of...

Re: FX COMPANIES

Trust is of course a subjective matter of opinion, but the above can easily be assessed: What rate did they give you, and on what date?

Re: FX COMPANIES

I do find it odd that people on this board seem to want to justify their decision to use a bank whilst ignoring the fact that the security it provides (real or imagined) comes at a premium.

If...

Re: FX COMPANIES

I get a fantastic rate into EUR, thanks to OANDA. I don't have to accept that it costs more - because it doesn't.

And, frankly, I have more faith in their continued existence than most Spanish...

Re: FX COMPANIES

You should always do your trades during hours when the FX markets are open. They will let you do it on weekends, but at significantly worse rates. So weekends = a bad idea.

Re: FX COMPANIES

I just logged into my XEtrade account (which I never actually used once I saw their rates), and they seem to be about 1.26% worse than OANDAs offered rate. So at 5K that's equivalent to a £63 pound...

I'm surprised there's so little in it, actually (0.5%). How did you do the quote? Log in to XETrade and start the transfer process?

Re: FX COMPANIES

Good news then! Sounds like it was regulatory issues they had then. I imagine being a "3rd party wire service" is a pretty big deal for a non-bank institution.

Re: FX COMPANIES

Annoying to say the least - no doubt it's regulatory headaches that they don't want to deal with.

I've fired off an email to them asking for comment. Would certainly be very inconvenient if they...

What an odd thing to write in your first post on these forums. I am a regular user of their service, and they are doing nothing of the sort.

Re: FX COMPANIES

Well.. if the sidebar app is showing accurate interbank rates (and it does sound about right), then you paid 4.3% of your transaction to the Post Office. It's a rather bad rate I'm afraid

Re: FX COMPANIES

Of course, it'd be far more fun to do a "if you show me yours, I'll show you mine" ;-)

OANDAs rates are public, and I can confirm they are exactly as shown in the link I gave previously.

I'd...
