Clearance times for containers coming into the UK

Hi guys, anyone recently had a container come back in to the country that has been randomly selected for xray?

The broker keeps saying its just a random thing and it happens all the time but for...

Re: moving from OZ to the UK

Concur. Have just had friends from Singapore to visit us here in Melbourne who reckon its unbelievably expensive here relative to the rest of the world now (they are well off, semi retired and...

Re: Getting close now...

Thanks. A friend of mine suggested, based on a 50% auction clearance rate last weekend, ours was the only house to sell in Melbourne. Not sure that's entirely correct but we've certainly been a lot...

Getting close now...

Well the house sold on the weekend so probably looking like an October departure at this stage. Plenty to do between now and then... Hopefully the aussie dollar is still strong then and the UK...

Re: IS IT REALLY THAT BAD OUT THERE NOW THEN

In the old days people like me used to move from NZ (cheaper) to UK (expensive), save some pounds and go back to NZ with a bag of sterling and a favourable exchange rate and ratchet themselves up a...

Re: 22 hours into my Melbourne move; first impressions? BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!

Almo, you’ve not sold me on the market concept. I’m with you, I don’t buy beef at the supermarket. I said you couldn’t get much more at the market that you couldn’t already get at the butcher...

Re: 22 hours into my Melbourne move; first impressions? BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!

Yep, I live here in good old Melbourne.

My point was more that weather is always a two-sided coin - e.g. more sun and less rain makes for a brown landscape. Usual stuff that's been said many...

Re: 22 hours into my Melbourne move; first impressions? BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!

Just gotta even this up a little….

1) I don’t smoke so it doesn’t affect me but I sure am sick of the playground politics employed in the government vs industry tobacco wars and those witty, well...

Re: How has your family life changed for the better since emigrating?

I guess it depends on what you call quality of life and what you want for your kids growing up. The problem is that everyone on this board will answer these questions differently.

If your idea...

Re: Moving back to UK in 12 weeks - questions!

I'd get the UK passport if at all possible - don't underestimate the amount of bother it could cause you (speakign from experience here...). You may have problems with the airport check-in staff in...

Re: Moving to Melbourne

I think you’d be crazy to live east of Spotswood if that’s where you’re going to be working - which basically leaves newport/wiliamstown/spotswood areas and then further west. It’s the bridge and...

Anyone ever taken a car from Australia to UK?

Did you get specialist car movers or just drive it into your container?

Any problems with things like servicing?

I’m keen to hear about your experiences – good and bad of course.

Re: Trip report – UK Christmas hols

There does seem to be some consistency in the responses yes. Anyone checked out UK-yankee discussion boards yet? Those guys rave about the place…

Ok, here are some more observations for you...

Re: Transit lounge singapore airport

Easy. If you want to sleep, go for the hotel option. If you just want your own space to relax, go for the lounge. Probably depends on your length of stopover. Both are very good options for the...

Re: Trip report – UK Christmas hols

I think my wife is on the plane already...

Realistically, we have a house, business, dog here etc so it will take some time to wrap up. I'm not sure I'd rush back to the UK for 2011 but would...

Trip report – UK Christmas hols

Flew Melbourne/Heathrow via Singapore, arrived 20th December. Heathrow had just reopened after snow – quietest we’ve ever seen it. Minus 7 degrees on landing (white Christmas – just what we came...

Re: Is Brisbane the right place to raise children?

Fair comment Fish.

Still interested in opinions on the core question. Is it worth trading off the family and an environment that may not suit, for an environment that may suit but no family...

Re: Is Brisbane the right place to raise children?

I’m interested to know, based on personal experience, who would trade off a more relaxed, outdoor life-style like you have in some Aussie cities over the family network and support you’d get from...

Re: Has the Australian dream lost its sparkle................anyone???

Modern houses to me are like modern bits of furniture. Glue and staples. MDF. Ikea generation. Nothing is built to last any more. No thought, no creativity, everything done on the cheap – and it...

Re: Has the Australian dream lost its sparkle................anyone???

Personally I much prefer the houses in the UK. The only strange thing I find about UK building is why they build semi-detached houses in the middle of the English countryside when they’ve got all...
