Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

But if you come to the MBTTUK forum and start referring to how awful the UK is you will annoy people straight off.

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

Well, let's face it, he IS trolling from an anti-UK/pro-southern hemisphere perspective which always seems to go down more smoothly than the other way round.

No one will admit that, but it...

Re: Best area in Melbourne for beach+shopping

The ticket machines in the UK are light years ahead of the ones in Melbourne. Most of the trains are grubby and most have graffiti if not on the chairs then on the walls or windows. Litter is often...

Re: Best area in Melbourne for beach+shopping

The Frankston line is awful. My (Aussie, incidentally) wife says she can't believe how filthy the trains are and how many weirdos and unpleasant types seem to be onboard after an evening into the...

Re: Best area in Melbourne for beach+shopping

Near to malls? Well, the malls are about twenty-five minutes to half an hour apart, so you can really only be near one. Supermarkets, which are mostly terrible in Australia, are everywhere.

Re: Dickensian Christmas trip to UK part 2 without trolls

Well, obviously. But only because that's all of they've ever known.

The fact of the matter is that the vast bulk of all the Christmas traditions are designed for hibernating indoors during cold,...

Re: Did not like the UK when living there BUT...

The paragraph I have highlighted is really excellent and very insightful. I think I realised I was in trouble driving away from the airport the day we landed in Australia. I just knew somehow that,...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

I'm not confused by people who like Australia. And in any case, I don't have the view that the country I am in is evil and that moving back to the UK will fix my life in the way people leaving the...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

Stormer999 is in the ''I hate the UK and want to get out cos I think life elsewhere will be better'' basket. So he's confused (cognitive dissonance) by those who don't feel the same.

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

Well, first you gotta get over your assumption that everyone made a deliberate choice to leave the UK based on an active preference to live somewhere else. Not so in many cases.

People go...

Re: Anyone experiencing reverse culture shock?

The only 'shock' I get when I return to the UL is that, contrary to the steaming pile of crap that many expats talk about the UK (especially here on BE) the country is perfectly lovely, not nearly as...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

According to hereandthere, the UK is uniquely doomed to a slow and painful death.

Re: Dickensian Christmas trip to UK part 2 without trolls

I loved hereandthere's comments on the previous thread about how winter and cold dark nights adds nothing to Christmas.

What crap!

The whole point of Christmas - the only point of it for the...

Re: do you drink more in oz, hic??

Not at all. You are my favourite person here. Despite the fact you don't agree with me a lot of the time.

Which flies in the face of all those who accuse me of wanting to make everyone hate...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

Sensationalism sells in the UK. It doesn't in Australia where there is a certain moderateness and conservatism that prevails most of the time. Having a moan is certainly a British trait too. The...

Re: do you drink more in oz, hic??

In Europe and the UK they have places, proper shops, that sell ant colonies and ant related equipment to hobbyists. Including exotic species from Australia and South America.

No such thing in...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

I firmly believe some expats deliberately convince themselves, perhaps on an entirely subconscious level I admit, that the UK is awful as this adds huge validity to their new life abroad.

Someone...

Re: Dickensian Christmas Trip back to UK update.

HA!

I was almost disappointed that I had a great time in the UK and saw no violence or social unrest or decay because I would dearly love to be one of these expats that merrily and smugly...

He is simply in the ''UK is hell'' expat club. Some expats are like him. They will very gladly talk at enormous length about how terrible the UK is and how anyone with half a brain should leave at...

Re: do you drink more in oz, hic??

That's very much how I feel. Whereas in the UK I might phone a mate or watch something on TV in the evening or speak to my parents I find that I have far less to do in Australia hobby/leisure wise. ...
