Re: Hotel Ramblas rip off ~1000 euros; what does the law say?

There's no credit card to speak of in this case.

Re: Hotel Ramblas rip off ~1000 euros; what does the law say?

Hotel Ramblas' jurisdiction is exclusively in Spain. When the Dutch travel agency paid Hotel Ramblas in Spain, for service in Spain, the transaction is bound by Spanish statutes.

The cash...

Re: Hotel Ramblas rip off ~1000 euros; what does the law say?

Their site ( www.ramblashoteles.com ) doesn't publish any policies. Just a photo gallery that does an amazing job of misrepresenting the quality.

Hotel Ramblas rip off ~1000 euros; what does the law say?

A friend paid cash to a Dutch travel agency for a Barcelona vacation package. Hotel Ramblas was part of it. I won't get into all the quality issues, other than to say this was a humid ghetto...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

JLFS believes deliverables cannot have a realtime trading figure, which is not true. Many brokers dealing strictly in deliverables hide this information, which creates this misconception. But what...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

Of course there is a correlation between market value and what Joe Shmoe is offering. Joe Shmoe is watching the market too, and taking care to add a margin.

Simply comparing John Doe's deal...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

I maintain a wiki on the subject:

http://money.wikia.com/wiki/Moving_Money

So I try to stay current. I would love to get some contributors, so I would have less work to do.

Re: Money transfers to Spain

I found a comparison site worth checking out:

http://www.sendmoneyhome.org/

I'm surprised there are any brokers open enough for a comparison site to be able to operate. There aren't a whole...

Re: What is the best free spanish email service

I was responding to the comment: what does provider X offer that gmail doesn't?

Gmail is somewhat crippled with limitations. The limitations don't hinder average users, as long as they don't use...

Re: What is the best free spanish email service

No, you don't do that for every piece of correspondence, because it's too time consuming to do that with each recipient you deal with. It also limits you to using gmail for inbound mail service,...

Re: What is the best free spanish email service

Gmail blocks users from sending mail using a disposable address.

Re: Money transfers to Spain

Someone recommended ukforex here, as well as on another expat site. They have a reputation for being one of few brokers that is "transparent", so I looked into it.

Results:

Yes, they appear to...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

Expats have can have any currency, depending on where they worked most recently; USD, EUR, or GBP in particular. Which is why I asked. But I would agree, it's most likely British pounds, in which...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

By design, these FX companies have made it a point to make comparison shopping impossible.

What type of asset are you starting with?

If you're starting with US dollars, then the best option...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

The way to handle that with big ticket items is to pay with credit card anyway so you still have protections offered by the credit card (if there are any), and accept the surcharge. Then when you...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

It's a breech of contract (and also illegal in some parts of the US). I wouldn't characterize it as a "scam" if the surcharge is made clear in advance, and there's no opportunity for a client to...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

The surcharge is a violation of visa terms whether or not it's itemized. Itemizing it in fact makes the violation stand out more clearly, and more difficult for the merchant to defend (but at least...

Re: Money transfers to Spain

Generally, yes, but the pitfall is not exclusive to speculation. CMC Markets offers deliverable assets (and also serves speculators), and they run the wire siphoning scam. Although it's less common...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

It's incidental. They could have used astrology to let the alignment of stars determine whether or not they add a nickel to every room. Merchants obviously don't like seeing consumers get increased...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

There is an optimum price, where an increase damages profit, and a decrease damages profit. Although it's not straight forward to determine what the optimum price is in some industries, the optimum...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

Added to the merchant's cost, yes, added to the shelf price, no. The shelf price is based on market conditions. If you can increase that price for more profit, then you were not charging the...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

A business cannot legitimately vary price based on the payment instruments you mention. I realize some businesses do it anyway, because it's not enforced, but it violates the merchant agreement with...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

You don't seem to have read what I posted. If you're a merchant who can increase net income by simply charging more, then you weren't charging the optimum price to begin with. And in that case, the...

Re: Where to report tourist scams

Scams are generally not the victims fault. I will assign some blame to victims too apathetic to do anything to protect the next person, but either way the "fault" of the scam belongs primarily to...
