How about Minnesota? reasonable cost of living and decent place to raise a child. There are also the carolinas which have cool winters and are decent, Pennsylvania has some beautiful towns...

Ashburn is also a lovely community and not too far (distance wise) from Herndon but the traffic is horrendous as there are only two or three ways in or out and its always bumper to bumper at rush...

I have to agree on Reston as well. Bought a flat here in '99 and was suprised to find out that Reston has 15 swimming pools open to Reston residents, 49 tennis courts , 3 lakes and a buch of free...

I love that store though have found that world market carries some of the crisps, candies and such much cheaper.

There is also a nice little takeaway place in Alexandria called "The Chippery" run...
