Well I thought I'd provoke some interest
What new foods have you discovered here that you wouldn't have found in the UK
and maybe those that you wouldn't recommend
On my plus list are Perogies and along with a new list of game food such as Bison, moose and currently looking to sample beaver (waits for the replies)
the ethnic variety here in Brampton has opened my eyes to real Jamaican, Indian and African food too.....
But I found Bear meat sausages difficult to stomach

I was used to good, real, Indian food in the UK but it can't be found in Peterborough, except on the farmers market where there is some home made Indian food. We could also buy bison, ostrich, and other exotic and game meats at the farmers market in Bedfordshire.
We can't abide Canadian Chinese food as found out here in the sticks. We haven't eaten Chinese food in Toronto yet, so can't comment about how good or otherwise that is. We've tried Korean and Japanese food here and like that. Store bought sushi has too many chemicals listed in the ingredients so that worries me. The sushi rice has sugar in it too, does it in the UK? or even in Japan?
What I have found here is yummy Mexican food, and discovered that there is more to American cooking than junk food. BBQ, grilling, smokers. All good stuff.
Store bought food? The ham is vile, truly vile. Full of sugar and slime. Yuck. If someone could recommend a decent brand that would be good thanks.

Stuff people over 50 make for Christmas dinner. It's like it's out of the Kraft recipe book of assimilation. I think their marketing line was "real Canadians eat colorful sweet salads made from our product line."
Sorry Mrs. Ummchuckchuck if I eat any of your 16 different phosphorescent salads I'll throw up on your cat.

One day we will visit a Chinese restaurant in Toronto.
Though "one of the most authentic" still doesn't say that it is authentic!

I've eaten crocodile, kudu, boa constrictor and wart hog.
Although rarely in Canada.

Now remember I left in 1981!
New foods - apart from dim sum and sushi (which didn't exist in England when I left) - mountain sheep sausage, cariboo stew, fresh caught lobster and dungeness crab, trout right out of the water and into the frying pan!, blue cheese salad dressing (had never heard of that before!), a 36oz steak (when I landed in Calgary!), chicken wings in buffalo New York (the absolute best and authentic!!!), bison, moose, mule deer (very grassy tasting), whitetail (nicer), grouse that I had shot (ummmmmm!)desserts with breakfast!!!, colourful salads (doubtful), macaroni salad (yuk).

Yeah... what's with the whole green coleslaw stuff? It just loooks wrong!
Umm.. new foods... Perogies are quite good with the burnt butter, also had authentic (ie cooked by a Canadian
) pork & beans which were yummy.
Not liking coffee or cheese is quite difficult as I find that cheese seems to be in everything
and these seems to be the staple foods.
I find that everything is really salty too... and why is all the ham and bacon smoked???? Have managed to find some nice un-smoked ham in the deli section of 'Save on Foods' though.
Oh, and one last thing... sweet bread
Why???
