My situation is same like u. I also stuck with 6 over all bands, but gave IELTS in Academic Mode. and also got 5 yrs + exp. in IT Software Development.

Best advice is to go for IELTS...

Better You go for skill assessment first. When it get positive then u go for IELTS. Because in skill assessment no need of IELTS score.

IELTS score is required when u applying for ur PR file.
