I have the answer in my head, but it it would take an essay to communicate it. So to be brief. The emphasis of the Quran is on action as opposed to culture.

All the sins mentioned on the list have at one time or another been considered sinful in all cultures. Even today, most would be considered immoral, wrong or criminal in the west

It can be - it really depends on the family, the country, the circumstance....

I hate to sound like a snob, but educated, middle class Asians tend to be a lot more progressive than villagers......

My best friend is married to an educated Asian from a wealthy family but he has not even told his family because she is white european. They even tried to hold him hostage on one trip back to his country by removing his passport so he could not go back to her. He had to get a friend of his to get him a new passport so he could return to Europe.

They have told him that they don't mind him marrying her as a second wife but he must marry a local girl of their choosing.

not at all. there is a huge difference between a revert and a convert.
the word revert intrinsically implies that the person was a muslim prior to denouncing Islam and then finding it again.

I believe you chose the word carefully!

This is cultural. Marrying a local girl is a practice carried out by Asians of all religions.

but the majority of the sins are cultural/moral based restrictions from which the west has advanced through periods of enlightenment. Blindly following strict medieval restrictions means that society will remain medieval by nature!

I agree with you there - the difference between the fundamentalist Islamist approach to Shariah Law is that it's principles are immutable and eternally correct. I believe that certain authorities within some Islamic countries have attempted to append case law and legal precedence to Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh in Arabic) - even this is split between a number of different schools of thought.

There are a number of voices from within the Islamic world that call increasingly for a seperation of religion and state, arguing that this is a necessary pre-requisite to stabalizing the countries of the Middle East.

Even here in the UAE they have established a Civil Code which they try to make work in tandem with Shariah Law - it's a messy compromise and full of inconsistencies.

Sorry if it came across like that. What i meant was that its a tribal thing that has nothing to do with Islam.

For a lot of Asian kids, the pressure to please the family is very strong - but it doesn't make it an invalid life choice to allow your partner to be selected by your family/community, particularly if you're planning to spend your life entrenched in that community.

Freedom - it's a wonderful thing, but it ain't everyone's cuppa coacoa....
