It was just a cut and paste job as Ray says.

Thanks go to Al-Kaba'r By Muhammad bin 'Uthman Adh-Dhahabi, rendered into English by Mohammad Moinuddin Siddiqui.

I was just making the point that many of the sins appear to be related to Arabian culture and customs at the time (1400 years ago) and that the Qu'ran was written by the companions of Mohammad (PBUH)(who, himself, was illiterate) and reflect so much of Arab culture of this period.

As a non muslim, I did not understand that, if the holy words were for all mankind, why was there such an emphasis on historical Arabian culture and customs?

but.. what makes you think that this is how marrige is happening?

let me tell you something.

the process of getting married is like so (take me as an example)

my sister or my mother will suggest a woman for me.

if i agree

they will approach her family.

her family will ask about my manners, (investigation) to make sure that i am good enough for her.

if i meet their requirments and they find me a good man

they will allow me and her to see each other and to talk.

from their point of view they will not allow anyone to reach this point unless they find him good enough for their daughter.

after this meeting the final answer is for the girl. to accept or to refuse

now show me in this whole process where was the girl forced to marry me????????????????????

or are you asking that she must have sex with me in advance and live with me for a while before she deicdes if she wana marry me or not??

or are you suggesting that if she didn't enjoy having sex with me that she try with another one ..and another one ...until she finds her soul mate ??

or are you suggesting that she should go to night clubs and pick the one she think who is gona be good for her.

Men know men hell better than ladies !!!

ladies most of the time fail to know the reality of the man and most of the time she is being fooled ... untel she finds someone honest ... (the process for a girl to find her future husband involves alot of relations)

i read once in the news paper that in USA ... a girl sleep with more than 100 man during her life !!! (what life is this)

we protect our women ...we make sure that they wont get hurt when they get married.

are there mistakes happening??

yes that's normal .. people do mistakes... and they don't follow this way of marrige all the time.

but still .. the process of marrige this way is better than any other process of marrige :)

i hope i mananged to answer some of your questions

i am not suggesting anything..i was asking a question.
and having a meeting with a man is absolutely absurd to base a marriage on.How you can say this is a better process than any other is amazing to me.
...and your mummy picks her for you?!!

Arranged marriages are not necessarily so terrible - I know a lot of Asians (Muslim, Sikh and Hindu) who went down that route and have ended up with what appear to be happy relationships. Then again, I've seen arranged marriages fail, I've seen non-arranged marriages fail.

For a lot of Asian kids, the pressure to please the family is very strong - but it doesn't make it an invalid life choice to allow your partner to be selected by your family/community, particularly if you're planning to spend your life entrenched in that community.

Freedom - it's a wonderful thing, but it ain't everyone's cuppa coacoa....

I have the answer in my head, but it it would take an essay to communicate it. So to be brief. The emphasis of the Quran is on action as opposed to culture.

It can be - it really depends on the family, the country, the circumstance....

I hate to sound like a snob, but educated, middle class Asians tend to be a lot more progressive than villagers......

You have to differentiate between Islam, culture and men. In Islam women can ask for a divorce.

Men can contribute to a culture were women feel they cannot ask for a divorce.

Sexist men, culture and Islam have become entangled so they may appear the same but in reality they are separate. Usually the people who understand Islam without its cultural baggage are Western reverts.

Oh pleeese...........

Rubbish, no one is superior. I may be brighter than you, but you may be more practical, it all evens out, male or female.

Mind you, unless you have a couple of degrees, a successful business & a happy faithful marriage, I would say I'm perhaps superior to you and dammit, I'm a woman!
