OK I'm obviously a bit hard of understanding tonight but I couldn't make the connection between your brothers service & his injury and a politician. Yes politicians decide where they'll intervene using military force (war is politics by other means - Von Klauswitz) but the people in the forces are there through choice.

"My older brother served in the Falklands War and returned unscathed, he then did a tour of Ireland (his 3rd) and was shot by the IRA (who had taken over a family's house opposite the barracks and used a heavy machine gun with armour piercing rounds to ambush his squad ).
Did I blame Margaret Thatcher ? No"

Re: Brits celebrate Thatcher's death
I do think one should tell it like it is in her obituary, instead of sugar coating. People don't extend the same curtesy (collective amnesia of gross wrongs) for 3rd world autocrats so she shouldn't get a pass. Should Kissinger get a pass also? If Apartheid was wrong (any person with humanty wil agree) then why shouldn't Thatcher be called out on it or do people practice cognitive dissonance.
South Africa is not minincing words (as it should be) in their Thatcher obituary.

Most of the pics I have seen are pics of kids. They are probably the sort who would cause this type of trouble at the drop of a hat. Round them up and put them in the forces...that'll teach them.

Re: Brits celebrate Thatcher's death
All seems a bit tasteless celebrating her death in this manner. Didn't particularly like the woman for what its worth.
Her non compromising tactics in the north were one reason for the continuation of the problems up there, she was the strongest recruiter the IRA ever had. Compromise was possible as it subsequently turned out.
(and no I am not an IRA sympathiser, there was no need for all of these deaths regardless of which side you are on)

Not exactly right for the title of this thread, but I can't be bothered with those gimps in TIO.

She certainly had a lot on her plate...Ireland, unions, an economy that had been screwed up for decades, apartheid, communism still a force and the cold war (I watched Threads last year and it brought back memories of being a kid and wondering when the bombs would drop). Looking back, whilst it was a good time to be growing up, they were uncertain times.

Now that Russell is in the fourth form, he should be capable of putting together a more coherent essay than this.

Re: Brits celebrate Thatcher's death
'blah blah blah....blanket statements.....blah blah blah.....I was a drugged up w*nker....blah blah blah....blanket statement.....blah blah blah....my ideology is the 'right' ideology and therefore so naturally 'right' that I've never questioned it but only the wisdom, judgement and capabilities of those who question me ...blah blah blah....'they' didn't understand us....blah blah blah.....self righteous....blah blah blah.'
To be fair many on the right are just as guilty of incoherent sentiments.
It must have been galling if the lady was so...obviously bleeding wrong....that she still decisively won three consecutive elections and the subsequent Labour governments never attempted to undo her main policies.

Re: Brits celebrate Thatcher's death
Nothing to disagree with here:
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams commenting on the death today of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said:
“Margaret Thatcher did great hurt to the Irish and British people during her time as British Prime Minister.
"Working class communities were devastated in Britain because of her policies.
"Her role in international affairs was equally belligerent whether in support of the Chilean dictator Pinochet, her opposition to sanctions against apartheid South Africa; and her support for the Khmer Rouge.
"Here in Ireland her espousal of old draconian militaristic policies prolonged the war and caused great suffering. She embraced censorship, collusion and the killing of citizens by covert operations, including the targeting of solicitors like Pat Finucane, alongside more open military operations and refused to recognise the rights of citizens to vote for parties of their choice.
"Her failed efforts to criminalise the republican struggle and the political prisoners is part of her legacy.
"It should be noted that in complete contradiction of her public posturing, she authorised a back channel of communications with the Sinn Féin leadership but failed to act on the logic of this.
"Unfortunately she was faced with weak Irish governments who failed to oppose her securocrat agenda or to enlist international support in defence of citizens in the north.
"Margaret Thatcher will be especially remembered for her shameful role during the epic hunger strikes of 1980 and 81.
"Her Irish policy failed miserably."

But celebrate her death? The people who do that are actually worse than her. I don't think she would dance in the street when the people in the hunger strikes die. Hate for hate breeds more hate.
