Easy to explain. Middle class British people are always moaning about something. That particular survey seems a bit suspect too. So what if Adelaide was designed in 1831 as a vision to create a better Britain.. That just shows that British colonialists in pre-Victorian times were inveterate moaners just like contemporary Brits.
"With the economic downturn Britain’s living standards have been declining as household bills rise such as fuel, mortgage, and food prices.
According to a new research released by audit firm KPMG this week, nearly 5 million workers in the UK are not earning enough to maintain a decent standard of living.
The study concluded that twenty per cent of the working population receives less than the minimum wage, which is $13 an hour. "

It in no way contradicts what we have found so certainly no need to 'explain' anything. If you are happy where you are and have no intention of returning thats not a problem, this country gives us what we want, simple

Doesn't explain this part though:

When that happens, as it surely will, Britain is inherently better placed than most nations to survive it. For many reasons including cultural and geographic. It won't be any harder than surviving the second world war, the outcome of which was never really in doubt despite the fears that it was.

Not sure I see the logical connection ... what needs to be explained? I think most people knew, without this particular study to rely on, that millions of workers were not earning enough to pay for what they've been taught they are entitled to. And, as chris955 rightly points out, workers are lagging behind in Australia and the US too.

Some dissection of the UK unemployment figures that may assist the OP in his quest for UK information.
