Look at your family over there, how are they all doing? None of mine are rich but they are all working and all seem to be doing just fine........just as you (and I) will, it might be a bit of a push at the beginning but we will get there.

I have been having terrible cold feet this past week and I am leaving 8 weeks from tomorrow!!

See and as I typed that word "leaving" I got palpitations, because now this is not a dream it is REALITY!!

Thanks so much, everyone on here is so great another thing that makes me miss the UK all the people, you are right none of my family and friends are loaded but they are happy, all have roof over there head food on the table and seem to take a couple of nice holidays a year.. None of them have a had nervous breakdown which i happened to experience this time last year.. so quality of life has seemed to keep them all well enough.. thanks again (:

Same with my lot, they are all doing fine, they gripe about things you wouldn't even think about over here. Good luck Hayley.

Then I have to remember they only think of the U.S as what they see on t.v I have lived here for 20 years and everywhere has its issues.. i dont know just woke up a bit worried for the future today i think new years does that to you...

Of course your friends think the U.S is great...everywhere is great when you are on holiday for 2 weeks!
Once you actually live, work and shop in a new Country, you find out how things REALLY are.
I love holidaying in Italy and everytime I return I say I want to live there, but in reality I probably couldn't live there because it is so different to how we live in England. I can't speak enough Italian to work so I would be very lonely.
Yes, Britain has problems, but so does the U.S, Canada and anywhere else. Go for it!

It's really, really difficult to comprehend what the U.S. is like when all you have known is the UK. I have been here over 30 years and reality only began to sink in 20 years ago. The UK is a totally different animal from the USA. When I grew up and lived in the UK, I thought all countries operated more or less the same way, except for the third world countries. I could not have been more wrong, but it took experiencing it - and the shock - to finally realize it.

It's funny you say that - I have been in the US 15 years and reality only started to sink in for me a few years ago. So maybe there's a 10-year limit to being starry-eyed

I'll second that, just go to the centre of town and look at their faces, some look like they have the worlds problems on their shoulders.

While we worry about healthcare they worry about where they are going on their 4 weeks holidays, Huhhh if only...

On the other hand Americans are so positive and seem to have less in my opinion.

I also have a couple of UK freinds here that like to go back on their hols but say they would never live there but they are the ones that are loaded with cash and driving porsches so if i was that well off maybe i would feel different too.. but once those things are gone you miss the people, the culture and the tradition.. everything seems so false here...

Good luck to those landing soon, I land Jan 31. I am still having the wobbles every so often. We have been back in Canada for 4 years, i knew after year 1 it was a mistake. But I stuck it out "just to make sure". I guess i was sure lol.

It's a scary thing to do, I think i have a better perspective this time and I am armed and ready!

I will be in Doncaster .....so any of you are returning close to there we can have a coffee (or tea) and share a little support if needed :-)

5.5 months! Have chosen a shipping company and now need to choose a date for them to come and pack - and decide what we will do for the month that we will be without basically everything except our suitcases!

I think there is , that's when I started to question what am I doing here . For me it was the realization that " O.K if I stay here this is my life : See my family for a week or two each year at best, all the while my parents grow older, my nephews grow up and I'm barely in their lives anymore, I'm surrounded by fake, shallow, materialistic people, I'm paying an arm and a leg in taxes, insurance etc, etc and eventually I'll grow old wither and die with no one around that gives a sh**t " .

Sorry if that's too maudlin but it's the truth - it's really made me think. Like a lot of people say "Stuff" is just stuff, family & friends are what count for everything in life.
