In the UK at least, a lot of the kebab shops have vegetarian options.

Good point. The Irish, in particular, are big into buying overseas
property. Budapest is a current favourite.

Not just rubbish: unjust rubbish. "They're over here, stealing our
jobs", is the refrain of the unemployable.

Well that's a bit arrogant. The term "unemployable" puts the blame on
those who can't find a job when it's actually a defect of our economic
system.

It's a fact that capitalists take advantage of wage differences when
they can, to the disadvantage of those who sell their work to make a
living. It's also a fact that they try to create conditions where they
can do that, free movement of labour from low wage countries being one
such condition.

It's not the fault of the Poles or whoever applies at a lower salary
than the locals, but the process is real. Maybe you're not personally
affected by it, and AFAIK conditions on the job market are currently
not very harsh in the UK and Ireland, but some people are.

Regards

    >Well that's a bit arrogant. The term "unemployable" puts the blame on
    >those who can't find a job when it's actually a defect of our economic

In any society, there are some people who are incapable, by just about
any reasonable criteria, of meeting the requirements of employment.
There are alcoholics, habitually dishonest people, socially maladapted
individuals, grossly incompetent people, people whose family
circumstances inhibit them from performing in a job. I know such
people, and I expect that you also do. They are part of the reason why
"full employment" is often defined as 96% of the labour force being in
work.

I don't blame people who can't find a job when jobs are scarce. But I
live in a country where jobs are not scarce, where there are real
labour shortages. And yet there are people who can not get jobs
because no employer in his right mind would take them on. This
employer reluctance is frequently matched by applicant reluctance:
some of these people would be shocked to the core to be offered a job
and be expected to work.

I don't very much blame those people I describe as unemployable. It's
often not their fault that they have whatever attributes they have
which make them unsuited to the demands of employment.

But in the circumstance that prevail in Ireland, I see and hear people
making the "stealing our jobs" claim when there are plenty of
vacancies.

    >It's a fact that capitalists take advantage of wage differences when

Agreed.

    >It's also a fact that they try to create conditions where they

Agreed.

    >affected by it, and AFAIK conditions on the job market are currently

Agreed.

So, Wolfgang, we are not far apart in our analysis of what drives
economic decisions.

I am in favour of the state assisting those who have difficulty in
supporting themselves for whatever reason.

I support minimum wage legislation, even though it motivates some
capitalists to relocate to low-wage economies (let's not make it too
easy for the money-grubbing bastards).

But I live in a place where just about everybody in long-term
unemployment is in that position because he or she is simply not
suited for employment. I recognise that the situation is different
elsewhere, including Germany.

Well, at least Romania and Bulgaria are bloody well European, just
like Belarus and Bosnia. But Turkey? Turkey is hardly Europe. And it's
more than religion or skin color (Greek islanders are as dark as
Turks, and almost as hairy) . No, it ain't that. It's goddamn
cultural.

If Turks can be Europeans, then god dammit, I wanna be Canadian! Bring
me some OTC codeine and fresh maple syrup, bitches! Fit me with a
bright red serge and Strathcona boots! I'm a Canadian now!
