so there is truth in the idea that enlargement may force down
wages, same as globalisation, it seems obvious to me. The
"stealing our jobs" quote is a bit emotive, but I think its a bit
complacent to pretend that all those eastern European trucks that
are suddenly on the north circular are not affecting the job
prospects of UK truck drivers and workers who are clearly
perfectly employable, unless of course the amount of work
available has suddenly shot up. Perhaps it has?

In Germany there are 5 million unemployed because there is no work for
them. Likewise in the Netherlands the employment situation has gone
from full employment to increasingly high unemployment as industries
die.

40% of trucks in UK are carrying food to supermarkets. Trucking
companies register trucks in east European countries because they pay
less tax that way. I see all sorts of exotic number plates on what are
clearly Dutch owned trucks parked in area around the local flower
auction, which is the biggest in the world.

Here, I'm seeing large numbers of trucks with eastern European
plates and eastern European signwriting, a lot are certainly
clothes. I have seen few that look as if they are UK trucks
registered abroad, some could be UK trailers with east European
tractors.
Also lots of east euro cars, a surprising number boy racer style
(wings, big exhaust etc).

Truck driving pays better than teaching. Something they don't teach at
school.

The local industry has died because the owners moved production to
third world countries. Sales by these companies have fallen because
they have destroyed their home market.

but I am sure some are Dutch trucks registered abroad with east
European sign writing. The Dutch operate most of the European trucks.

and the Tory blair idea we all go to uni and become media types
could be seen through by a schoolboy, but not Mr Newport, or
perhaps he is a schoolboy?

Except by large scale borrowing as in UK.
