Probably depends on what the woman feels about romantics?

Wow. Thanks to all the many responses. They only sent one response to my
email account, so I figured no one cared. A lot of entertaining posts. I
still haven't decided where to propose. I may just carry the ring around
with me and wait for what I feel is the "right" moment. Walk along the
canals before sunrise and sunset, check out the plaza at night, go to a
couple nice restaurants, check out the gondolas and whether or not it
really is stinky. She also wants to do tours of Verona, Pompeii, Capri,
Tivoli...yes very high-maintenance. Would carrying the ring around be
dangerous? Every one talks about the pick-pocketers. Also, I just
bought the Nikon D70 SLR. Pretty expensive. She doesn't think I should
bring it for fear it may get stolen, but I bought it so I could take
nice pictures on this trip. Thanks again guys.

Pick-pockets or no, I'd keep it in a hotel safe until ready.
I wouldn't walk around with it even on the safest street in
the U.S.... how about you accidentally drop it and watch
it roll into a storm sewer. But it you must, here's my ideas:
(1) Put it in a passport/cash holder that you wear around
your neck or waist, under your shirt, or (B) sew it into a
pocket so that you can remove it by breaking the threads.

No, you can keep it concealed somewhere safe.

Outside Naples same as anywhere else. Inside low life areas of
Naples and low life areas elsewhere take care or don't go to
them, round railway stations often seems bad. I've had no
problems in Italy or anywhere else (I assume) by taking simple
precautions, although i'm told I look too scarey to mug. I carry
my SLR in a cheap old bag or a supermarket bag, not a camera bag,
I dont hang it round my neck. I dont stand about looking lost, I
watch people, if I think someone is following me I stop and look
at them etc etc.
dont worry too much though, at worst you get something stolen,
your chances of being killed are way lower than US. So enjoy it.

I don't know how dangerous it would be but I've had an idea. Could
you take a photo of the ring, cut it out and put it in the ring box,
perhaps with a note saying that the real one is back at the hotel in
the safe? I know it's a bit of a silly idea, but thought I'd post it
anyway!

One of the most romantic things you can do is take a gondola right. You
should propose on a gondola around dusk with the lights and sun playing on
the water. Have the gondoleir take you through the back canals where only
the Venitians live so it will be quiet and intimate. Then pop it on her.
If you have a money belt under your pants, there is no way that a pick
pocket is going to get the ring. You can even take a safety pin, and pin the
ring to an inside pocket, either on your coat or your pants.
Good Luck.
