I have just seen in the Germanwings webpage
Sixt offers a car in Croatia from eur 27.00 per day.
there is now a low cost sister company of Sixt called Sixty that offers cars
in Italy from 6 eur /day
Maybe they have the same in Austria

yes. He was an Israeli student. In those times cars were very expensive in
israel. I was in the national service at that time. and allowed him to use
my car for a few months.
He said he had been quite satisfied with the car ( an old 1100 Fiat ) and
that it was one of the few cars where water in radiators did not boil.

Hmmm. I poked around and could not find such a service. In fact all I
could find was that ferry service to Israel from anywhere in Europe had
either been cancelled or suspended indefinitely.

Cool. I didn't know about that one.
But it is only a passenger ferry. It looks like there's no ferry from
Europe to Israel anymore that will transport autos.
