I can only assume you are going along the lines that Mac stuff is
universally better, and that's why it costs a lot more.

Perhaps it's true, but I think more likely it's because of the closed
architecture design and a loyal user base.

What exactly did you want? - this subject has been hashed out in
excruciating detail. If you can't be arsed to go back and read what's
been said before, I'd love to repeat it, but it has exceeded even my
boredom threshold.

No I don't think he was saying that - I think he was referring back to
the comparison of different processors in the 2 computers cited by
Barbara as evidence that Macs are more expensive than PCs.

In a nutshell:

Martin claimed that Macs are more expensive than PCs on the basis of a
page on the Dell website that he apparently hadn't read properly.

Barbara claimed that Macs are more expensive than PCs on the basis of a
page on the Dell website that she apparently hadn't understood properly.

You claim that Macs are more expensive than PCs on the basis of ... errr
... seeing a cheap PC mouse in a local shop.

Your approach has the merit of economy, but you'll forgive me for
remaining unconvinced.

It was more than that I followed links on Dell's website to lap tops with dual
core blahdiblah processors, Dell slipped in one that wasn't a dual core
processor and I fell for it. The one thing I hate about Dell is the way they do
their marketing. Every time I have bought one it has taken several hours of
pissing around to find a winning combination that makes it a bargain. Of course
commercial buyers don't waste their time doing this when they are spending other
people's money.
I remember at work somebody being badly caught when he thought he thought he
had bought read/write DVD drives when in fact it was CD read write DVD read.
When he complained he had an afternoon of "it's imposhible" from a Dell salesman
who didn't appear to speak any language fluently. I think he was North African
with a smattering of French, Engrish and Dutch.

Maybe that's why he had to spend 20 euro on a bluetooth adapter
recently?

Mac mice are overpriced though IMO. They're nice mice, for sure, but
I've always used cheaper generics, especially as it took apple _years_
to get the advantage of multi-button (etc.) mice...

Me too! I've used the Kensington Expert for years, 6 URL buttons and 7
mouse click buttons.... just wish they would finally come out w/ a BT
version.

I travel w/ the Logitech BT trackball mouse.

I'm using a cheap (RF) Belkin wireless mouse just now with its wireless
keyboard. (Well, not exactly just now, when using the macbook on the
road, I don't use external mice or keyboards.) It's OK, I suppose, but I
find the mouse a bit chunky for my taste. I should probably get a more
comfortable one (last corded one was a small logitech which was nice)
given the amount of use it gets. I had a (non-optical) kensington for
about half a dozen years, and it was very good, but it kicked the bucket
eventually.

I was sceptical about the value of a wireless mouse, but having now got
one, I'm won over - it really is nice not to have the clutter of a
cable, and to be able to use it wherever is convenient on the desk. The
bad thing is that now I have a box of wired mice that I'm too spoiled to
use, exept for a little one that I travel with - I HATE touchpads!!

Absolutely, except at the moment my desk is in a bit of a mess, which
defeats the point!

It's fine for most of the stuff I do, but I can only do editing with
itwhen using notation software- for real work I need a keypad and a midi
keyboard.

It's obvious from what I wrote, and not mentioned in the thread.
Namely that Mac stuff is more expensive than PC stuff across the
board. And yes, I am acknowledging that in one instance it was for a
better processor, but all the other stuff costs a heap more from what
I saw in store.

This hasn't to my knowledge been discussed here yet.

Correct. The comparison (Barbara's?) was of a Dell with a "cheap"
Intel Core Duo 32bit CPU that Intel sells for only $200 to the Mac
which contained two Intel Xeon dual-core "Woodcrest" 64bit CPU's which
sell for $1700 a pair.

There was a $1600 price difference between the systems, but the above
mismatch explains away $1500 of it. YMMV on how much you want to
quibble about the remaining $100 difference at that point.

> The one thing I hate about Dell is the way they do

Dell's website is a bloody nightmare to find anything.

In my lost post, I did a build of a Dell that contained dual Xeon dual-
core CPU's like the Mac Pro did; if it doesn't pop up, I found it
under their their "Precision 690" chasis.

Anyway, by the time that I built the Dell up to be the equivalent to
the $2900ish Mac Pro, the Dell was over $3500...roughly $600 more
expensive.

I don't want to say that this disproves the "Macs are more expensive
than PCs" claims because in general, they do tend to be a bit more.
However, I find that the difference isn't worth fighting over because
there's so many other factors that are hard-to-quantify that its
simply not worth the small stuff.

For but example, Apple makes several "small footprint" machines like
the iMac. To claim a specific cash equivalent value for less desk
space wasted is a virtual impossibility because no matter what number
we pick, someone else's situation will be different so they'll assign
a different significance to the worth of that attribute. There is no
free lunch.

An argument I have said I couple of times I have little interest in.
From what I saw the difference was marginal but the price difference
was huge.

No I did not. I don't care what you say about me, but don't misquote
me. I wouldn't do that to you.

I have mentioned nothing of my approach. Indeed I said the opposite,
but don't yet buy into the "face it, Mac is better" viewpoint. Christ,
I've tried hard enough to walk the middle of the line on this.

I haven't yet found a touchpad that is as good as a mouse. I am sure
they will come up with something eventually that replaces both it and
the mouse. Who know what it will look like.

I quite liked using a tracker ball about 25 years ago.
