That was a joke, right? I never had trouble getting in wearing
jeans/trainers/m'cycle jacket.
Maybe they just don't like you ;-)

I didn't find any of these herds clogging up the National Gallery when
we were there in November. It is a beautiful museum with a world-class
collection, and one of the best-lit museums I've ever seen.

Possibly. I'm studying international-affairs at college now and they had
some information which would help.

Kidding? There's a museum by that name near the Oxo Tower, from what I've
read. I liked the idea of its randomness.

Yes, thanks.

Two weeks, and it is a wish-list that we're whittling down. We dropped
things like Madame Tussaud's before ever coming here...

Is this really so? I though it was just shorts and singlets they
objected to.

Maybe they have relaxed the rules recently, but I'd still advise the OP to
dress reasonably smart - you get much better attention from the sales staff
then, and thats half the fun of the place - pretending to be super rich.
Especially if two of you go and one plays the role of really keen to buy
something big on the spot but the other eventually persuades the first to
wait and think. (But I'm just cruel to people).

Somerset House, for the buildings, court yard and Thameside
coffee shops, plus the art exhibitions at Courtaulds.

I heard of a family whose teenaged daughter was refused entrance because
she was wearing jeans with a rip in the leg. (The rip was part of the
design, not the result of wear.)

I actually think such a policy is a bit obnoxious. I'd rather shop where
they don't treat the super rich better than the rest of us. But maybe
that's too much to hope for these days.

Agreed - but really Harrods is full of either the super rich (not too many
of those around) or tourists looking for the cheapest thing just so they can
get the carrier bag. So I don't really blame them for trying to track down
those with some real money to spend.

The Design Museum is near there too (Shad Thames); it's not the best
value for money at GBP6 admission but is very good if you like that
sort of thing. Seem to remember the restaurant was nice-but-pricey.

...and is crap. I used to work in one of the concrete overlooking
buildings. Its hardly worth the indulgence if you are already there,
let alone a special trip. (about 20m circular).

Assuming you are going for more than a month, this list is fine.
Natural History Museum (next door to V&A). Tate Modern is
excellent. What are the hotels for ? To stay in or admire how Britons
live :-)

Uh, no. Hampton Court is not accessible by Tube. But there is train
service from Waterloo Station.
