On the public beach in Senigallia, lots of people have permanently
installed private tables with umbrellas attached. Some padlock the
chairs to the tables, but other people just leave them unlocked, and
don't mind if other people use them. Same for the kids' buckets and
shovels.

Sort of on the subject of beach towels, I'm not intending to take one to
Sardinia, as I only want to take hand luggage, and that would take up
too much space. I'm not sure if the hotel in Alghero will have them for
rent. How much to you think a really cheap plain beach towel would cost?
I'm hoping a couple of euro, but haven't bought one for a while...

Oh, and per the Guardian story, burning beach towels seems a bit much.
I'd just have collected them up and put them in a bin.
My grandparents told a story of throwing the pool lounge towels into the
pool. When the towel owners complained, the staff responded that they
shouldn't have left their towels unattended!

I was on my balcony once very late at night when I saw the Brits
swopping all the German towels around, good fun.

They vacation outside your house, or you were on holiday?

MIght be as much as 7, but I'm not sure that changes your
calculation
much. Of course it will probably be the most hideous towel one has
ever lain eyes upon.

7 would be fine- I'm just looking for something to lie on if we go to
the beach.

I haven't bought one for a while either, and the last one I bought was
in a big supermarket. I don't know what they would cost along the
beach, but a few euros sounds optimistic.
You could always take a piece of cloth instead; it would take up less
room than a towel. You can put the hotel bath towel in your beach bag
to dry yourself.

5 euro (or equivalent) rings a bell, but that was in Croatia...

I really don't want to take anything extra in the luggage, but that's
not a bad suggestion!
