Is he possibly escaping from his wife? ;o)

If he's drinking wine, I guess he'd stink of it and wouldn't be
fooling anybody.

What comes out of the mouths of vodka drinkers often does.

His wife is really nice, and pretends to believe he's stopped
drinking, as his doctor ordered. (He already has liver damage.) He
doesn't fool anybody else, and I think his wife just pretends to be
fooled in order to not criticize her husband publicly.

Maybe he's figured out a way to ferment them.

I agree that it's rare, but I encountered just that in Venice a few
months ago. Italian youths drinking in a fairly quiet corner. They
weren't particularly rowdy- I assumed it was because they couldn't
afford bar prices.

Yes, but there has been at least one spectacular case in the West Midlands
of plod going into a knocking shop mob-handed, with press releases about
"trafficking", only to discover that the employees were there entirely of
their own volition, regarding prostitution in a well-managed brothel as a
more desirable occupation than picking spuds in Bucharest.

I think that the distillation process would remove too much Tomato
flavour for that. And if you don't ferment you would have sludge like beer.

We had a mayor who was up for re-election and I think he put the
screws on. (He won the election, too.)
