Default car hire - paris to venice

Travelling to Europe in September/October. Looked quickly at
Avis[1] and Europcar[2] sites to get a feel for hiring cars to drive
from Paris->Dijon->Brig->Venice. Car will be picked up in Paris
and dropped off in Venice.

Avis didn't even allow us to do it.
Europcar seemed to have trouble with the car types we were
choosing.

Anyone recommend a car hire solution to achieve the above?

Good, bad or otherwise experiences?

What country do you live in and how long are you going for?
If it's more than 17 days, check out lease-back. Prices vary
depending on your home country.

This is the Renault site, but there are also Peugot and
Citroen versions:

The closest drop-off point to Venice would be Milan.

G'day Alan - I'm in Aus as well (Brisbane).

We'll only be driving/hiring the car for 4 days.

I'll look at that site you recommend.

Train is not an option. My girlfriend gets motion-sickness and
we need to be able to stop when needed. She copes better if she
drives occassionally.

Sadly you will find that the cost of dropping this car off in another
country will be prohibitively expensive, if you can find any hire
company willing to take it on. The problem being that a French
registered car is useless in Italy so they have to repatriate it back
to France. You could try Auto-Europe, they have experience of this
sort of thing:

There are about 4 or so car hire firms with pickup/drop off points in the
Piazza Roma in Venice itself, including Avis, which might be useful to know.
There are more, I think, out at the airport.

If you are in the Aus equivalent of the AA or RAC or similar, it might be
worth contacting them and asking who they use in Europe. A couple of years
ago, my radiator died in Italy and it was more trouble to get it fixed than
to get the car sent home. The AA fixed me up with a car for the rest of my
holidays and for the journey back up to the ferry at Zeebrugge where I
handed it in at Brugge. It was through Hertz and there was certainly a bit
of hassle setting it up but it can be done. I don't think it was
prohibitively expensive because we had a budget on our insurance and it was
done well within that. They gave me a locally registered car for the rest of
my time in Italy and, on the way home, I had to call in to Milan Airport and
swap it for one registered in France but it worked out OK.

At the moment, if you are going on holiday to catch the sunshine, you might
do better to stay at home. It is a really crap summer in the northern bits
and it is/was roasting in the south.

Make credence recognised that on Sun, 19 Aug 2007 17:06:09 +1000, Troy

If it's just the train from Paris to Venice, could she just take
motion sickness medication for the once off trip? IME it knocks you
out cold for the journey, but seriously doing that trip by car will be
much more effort than by train.

I wondered how she managed the flight to Europe, but didn't like to ask.

Your flight looks like being entertaining...

I've never met anyone who get motion sickness on a train.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Especially the TGV, it's like sitting down at home!

LOL. I know. I've taken the flight before and know what to
expect. She hasn't and doesn't. We're breaking up the flight
over there with a stop-over in Singapore. Hopefully that'll
help. Aww, who am I kidding...

Me neither. Especially those high-speed ones over there. That
Eurostar is smooth as silk IIRC.

I know, that was my thoughts also. Who would've thought a woman
wouldn't believe me and thinks she knows best.

Ok, thanks for the tips.

Not to catch sunshine. We're planning on standing in queues at
all the tourist attractions getting hassled by gypsies ;-)
