In 1980's in Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia alone millions of people starved to
death due to persistent drought in the region. This way of dying is
naturally much more painful and horrendous than drowning which kills fast.

Are you saying that the disaster relief funds are short of money ?
If so how much are they short by ?

No, but one hurt person requires less aid than ten hurt people.

I am aware of that and I did what little I could to help. The problem is
still there. But it wasn't a single natural disaster. And in Asia there
are millions who are homeless and have nothing because of what happened
on 26th December.

This isn't the point. Its the wrong question. The correct
question is "can the local services cope with the problem?".
There are situations where disproportionate responses *are* made.
That happened with the Penlee lifeboat disaster, its largely no
worse for n lifeboatman to die in one accident or over a number
of single fatality accidents. The current situation isn't like
that though.

please list similar natural disasters that didn't get extensive
media coverage. No, on second thoughts stop arseing about with a
serious subject.

How the hell can anybody answer that? They don't even know how
many are dead. If the Red Cross finds itself with two much money
for the work on hand, i'll be very surprised.
But i can tell you one thing, without donations they *will* run
out of money.

These things *were* covered by the media. People however may be
less willing to give to Africa because many of the problems are
seen as self inflicted by local wars or incompetant/corrupt
government and administration or by climate (as you said
"persistent drought"), none of which will changed by sending food
parcels but rather only by fundamental changes in the way African
countries operate.

Fast. They need fresh food and water now.

Next, they need to get out the people with injuries. Infection and
disease are a major problems in the tropics.

After that, they have a little more breathing space. Roads can then be
rebuilt, and other infrastructure restored. It's at about that point
that corrupt governments will step in and pillage the funds.

Yeah, right, and they will cease reminding Europe that they bailed
their asses out of two whirled wurz...

How can you say that ?
Do you know how much cash the Red Cross (and other charities) has in its
coffers ?

What do you mean by size? The surface area of the region affected? The
number of people killed or injured? The magnitude at the epicenter?
The number and size of tsunami generated?

No, but 100 dead is a hundred times more than one dead.

They are mainly crippled by logistics, not funding.

I can think of two that took twice that number in the space of a few
days half a century ago.
