The issue of trust relates to the country's legal system where lawyers can run off with your money and that local councils can give your land to someone else and you no longer own your property.
Portugal and France have systems where these things cannot occur, the UK too.

Spain is not better/worse when it comes to these things and millions of people do not have the issues you mentioned. You just hear less in Portugal, because it's a smaller country and you have less foreign buyers. The council can also take your land in the UK if it was never legally yours and if they want to build a motorway you only get the market value.

Quite honestly I fail to see how anyone can claim Portugal property prices are expensive.
We all have to cut our cloth etc but as an example, there's a 2 bedroom place for sale close to me that detached, edge of village, ready to move into with enough space for a garage and a veggie patch for something in the region of €45k
Price comparison here: Price per Square Meter Europe | European Cost per Square Meter

Those links are always pretty misleading. To actually compare property prices, you would need a lot more factors. No doubt you can find old houses for under 50K, but you can find them in most countries.

Can do the same for Portugal. It happened a lot in Andalucía and Valencia, but unheard of in plenty of regions in Spain.
Whilst the Land Grab Law understandably attracted a lot of bad press the actual number of times that it has occurred is relatively small. What is clear however is that many of those affected have purchased Rural land without obtaining advice from a competent independent lawyer as to the potential risks and liabilities.

Okay these fiddles may only effect a small proportion of cases, but in many cases we are talking life savings, stress and devastated lives and that scares me for one. I would not want to live in such a country.

Surly that is the whole point, when you come to a new country nativity is an issue. Knowing who is competent and honest, well it is a problem if the law doesn't protect you. In the UK, France and I think Portugal that is the case, but in Spain crooked lawyers can and do operate and there are more lawyers per capita there than any other country.

No offence, but believing you are safe from these things in Portugal is naïve. Google land grab in Portugal and you'll find similar stories. The point is that you can get ripped off anywhere and you're not safer buying in Portugal. If the land was classed as urban, you'll never have a problem with land grab and just have to do your homework like you'd do in the UK.

Just look at the dates and the sources of your googled claims.
Just admit that you are promoting Spain, nothing to be ashamed of.

Not promoting Spain and think Portugal has it good parts and bad parts like any country. The point is that you are not safer buying in Portugal and you will find corruption, just like you would in Spain.

Portugal has never had the issues that Spain has had regarding property - and whether or not it is confined to particular regions is of little comfort to those who lost out. Enjoy your life there and we'll stay on the better side of the border.
