Moving to new zealand with children

Re: Moving to new zealand with children
Hi, I've been reading all your posts and found them so helpful, just a couple of questions, my husband has been offered a flooring job and it's 50k a year, he will be based in Auckland, I'll been looking at houses to rent for $350 a week, is that about average for the suberbs? Also I've got two daughters and need to find out about schools, are they hard to get into and what's the cost for the government funded ones?
Thanks
Thanks
Ruth - I really want to tell you to not do it. It really depends on how much savings you have and a whole load of other things. There are many beautiful and affordable places in the UK that you could consider, i.e. Scotland or the North of Eng!
If you really want to consider Auckland in NZ, please please take the time to read some of my posts on this forum across multiple threads (especially the 20% deposit, house prices and others). Also do read what other people say, my opinions are only of my experience and other youngish couples who are trying to get on the first rung of the ladder. I couldn't possible speak for everyone, nor would I want to. If you are serious about coming here, it will do you justice to spend a good few hours reading the comments and discussions.
Renting is expensive in Auckland, do you have to come to Auckland? There are plenty of other areas in NZ that are far cheaper and probably more realistic. If you have bags of cash however (i.e. you have at least 300,000 GBP in the bank), you'll be OK.
Here's a number of threads I really advise you read as you'll see there is debate back and forward:

Davros I think people contemplating moving 1/2 way around the World will be doing their own research thoroughly and will be taking the views of posters together with their history of posts and personal views.
I know you think the UK is going to offer you a soft ride in the housing market but having not long come from there I cannot see it. My house in Chch City has cost me a lot less than my house in a Warwickshire town and utilities are a damn lot less. So yes everyone has a different outlook on what is or isn't a good lifestyle/house/neighborhood......tell me my house in NZ is crap....it's still here after two almighty big bangs......I doubt my UK house would have stood either.

I know. It does make a big difference though doesn't it.
What you have to bring with you ( $$ ) and who you come to ( people you know already in NZ ) make a big difference.
Isn't what we want is for people moving over to make a success of their move ?
If so, then we all need to be very, very candid about who we are ; what we came from ; what we brought with us; what we have the potential to earn ; what our own income is.
Anything else is not exactly giving the hopeful migrant to NZ something to really work with.

Agree Bev,
Being a "newbie", we are heading to Auckland mid year. We come to Auckland under different circumstances- eyes wide open, lots of background research ,aware of housing/ rental/ living costs, .
Have seen it important to read through numerous issues surrounding the Auckland market and put in context to whats happening in the UK currently. We are all in different circumstances and can be too easy to generalise peoples views.
I for one struggle to get level views from this forum compared to lets say "international ones" as there is the predisposition for Brits to concentrate on the negative rather than grasp by the horns and do something about it (you see that every day in the uk). This site is well run, provides a good social interaction for many, but the constant bias of what NZ should be or was is like reading snippets from the Daily Mail.
Fully agree incomers need to made aware of reality- can't think of anything more commendable. However we all have differing start points to the adventure.
