Not Greenpeace then. That can involve climbing and rigging.

Not offshore but there is a fair amount of building activity down Christchurch way after the quakes for the 'rebuild'.

You might well pick up something there to get you started & NZ ticketed .

Think ive spent far to much of my life on offshore assets to join green peace be a bit pot calling the kettle black.

I have looked into christchurch and have spoke to a few companies in regards to work down there and the feedback is there is lots of it.

Personally when you work in the offshore industry its hard to work onshore again due to the work life balance it gives you (that said it is not for everyone) so just thought i would have a look at that aspect and see what is out there.

Flew down from AKL few weeks back and sat next to a Dunedin Kiwi who worked offshore UK on hydraulic fracking. He was back for 6 weeks then returning again (been doing it for 15 years), so there can't be too much NZ offshore work surely...unless he and his wife are not too close.
He didn't have too many nice things to say about fracking either.

I can understand that.

Good thing is that scaffolder is on what is called the NZIS Immediate Shortage list, so any NZ employer is free to offer you the work without having to prove why they need an overseas person. That helps.

Hey bev thanks for that info so does that mean a scaffolder would be able to obtain pr after a certain amount of time or would they only be able to get a visa to work in new zealand.

Depends.

You could not apply for a residency visa under the skilled migrant category.

If you could find yourself a job which pays $55K pa for a standard working week then you might be eligible for a WTR visa. - two years of work to residence -


Anything under $55K and maybe not for a credible employer , then the answer is probably a no.

Truck drivers are a current issue.

Not seen as a skilled occupation. Some have remained here for years on renewable temp work permits but will find that those permits may and will not be renewed because NZIS and the NZ Dept of Labour has now deemed there is no longer an 'immediate shortage'. As their pay falls under that for a WTR visa they are stuffed.

I have only known one trucker gain NZ residency. They were a specialised tanker driver.

I am wondering if your scaffolding thing is a bit specialised and so worth more pay to a quality employer - likely at Taranaki.

You still need an NZ scaffolding ticket though

Ive had job offers in christchurch ranging from 30$-35$ an hour that will be more than 55k a year.

Are you saying there is more money to be earnt in taranaki?

There is an offshore industry in NZ but I wouldn't think there was enough to sustain many scaffolders. I managed 2 trips off the Naki but most of my work was off Ozzie and even that is limited. I ended up going to the Gulf of Thailand and Qatar for most of my work until I gave it all up for a life onshore. (Personal reasons also played a big part). After 20 years offshore I was used to spending days at airports but commuting to anywhere from NZ just makes it 3 times worse and of course limits the options for employers, if they are paying for the flights and day rate in transit.
However like BEVS says there would be work for ever for scaffolders in Chch for the rebuild - good luck!

I can understand the offshore industry in nz will be very small but just thought i would take a long shot and see if i could gather any info.
