more people keep leaving NZ

Re: more people keep leaving NZ
Not bitter, just bored. The worst thing for me is being cut off from friends and family. I am not a 'grass is always greener' type. I know the UK is the best place in the world for me and that is why I didn't permanently leave. I agreed for my OH's job to come to NZ for x yrs. I had y years in another destination as well for the same reason.
I would be devastated if I had 'sold up' in UK and now found myself financially trapped in NZ.
I reckon you are likely a troll with so few posts under your belt but I'm bored so I replied anyway.

I'm not a troll.
I signed up here in January, dip in and out occasionally, but the lack of positivity means I rarely stay for long.
I happen to love living in NZ, which must be a rarity.

You have to bear in mind that not only is New Zealand losing its brightest and best, it is also competing with countries like Australia for trained professionals to replace the ones that are leaving.

And also it's a larf all the way to the enrichment of many peoples lives. Because you and BJ havn't found a move to NZ worth the money, it doesn't mean others havnt found it worthwhile, going by some of the accounts I have read here, surely??? For many people, isn't it a 2 way street? NZ treasury benefits, immigrants benefit. I personally know someone from the UK who loves it here. In those cases it's all win-win. Because you don't enjoy it personally, it doesn't necessarily follow that you have been hoodwinked (in my opinion). And it doesn't necessarily give a non-enjoyer free reign to question the integrity, morals and general existence of the people of this country, and post it on the internet (in my opinion). Criticise the cost of living, wages, the government etc etc, all you like. I have.
The above post is just what I genuinely think.

Next time you see them ask them how long they've been there and where they see themselves being in ten years from now. See if they pause before they answer the last part of your question.
Anyone who's had the gumption to get up and emigrate once is seldom content with their lot, if they were of that disposition they'd have stayed put in the first place.

Do you honestly know only one person from the UK who loves it there?

Are you saying that you're stuck there until the kids leave home.

Until your kids need a medical specialist or someone to teach them at school.

Re: more people keep leaving NZ
This past year it hasn't, net migration is negative.
Read up a bit on the battle to replace leaving Kiwis
NZ has first annual net migration loss in year to October since 2001, Stats NZ says; Net loss to Australia just below 2008 record
New Zealand had a net loss of 103 migrants in the year to October 2011, the first annual net loss since the September 2001 year, Statistics New Zealand says.
Migration losses were dominated by permanent or long-term (PLT) departures to Australia, with the net outflow of 34,957 during the 12 months to October 2011, just below the record of 35,400 set in the year to December 2008, Stats NZ said.

Employers in NZ Rely on Foreign Talent to Fill Vacancies
• 43% of employers are concerned about the impact on the labour market from talent leaving New Zealand to work in another country.
• Further, 68%of employers believe government and business are not doing enough to slow the outward migration of talent and attract these people back to New Zealand.
• Employers from New Zealand who look abroad to help solve talent shortages indicate the biggest obstacles they encounter when recruiting foreign workers are visa and legal requirements (25%).
• New Zealand employers named Australia (39%) and )the United Kingdom (16%) as the countries they believe provide the biggest threat to New Zealand’s ability to compete economically.

Re: more people keep leaving NZ
Isn't that what I said??
Re skilled people. Because 43% of employers are concerned, that doesn't mean there is reason to be concerned. The maths are quite simple. NZ lost 100 people last year. All those coming in (except family criteria and those coming from Australia) are skilled, by definition of the criteria to get in. All those leaving are not skilled (ie anyone can get into Australia)
Oh ... I've done my dash in my great 'defence of New Zealand' series for the time being. The last thing these people need is a proud patriotic and optimistic kiwi and a pessimistic kiwi expat come Australian, arguing over this trivia.
Somehow I've got to ween myself off this addictive forum. Ok ... I'm not posting anything until at least Christmas ... I've decided. I'll come back and wish all the Brit Expats a Merry Christmas and hopefully by then I would have found some other forum to annoy.
This is it .... I'm hitting the Submit button now

Re: more people keep leaving NZ
Sorry but I can't understand how you say there's a net gain of skilled people through migration when net migration is negative.
Surely if there was a gain of skilled people there'd be no skills shortage, there'd be enough jobs for Kiwis in NZ and none of them would have to leave to find work, NZ wouldn't need skilled migrants?
Of course skilled people are leaving NZ for Australia, if they weren't skilled they won't be able to find jobs and there's no welfare system to support them if they're on special category visas
A fair proportion of them are going to be skilled migrants with NZ citizenship looking for work across the Tasman, they're not all born Kiwis.
Am I oversimplifying things when I say that NZ can't compete with Australia for skilled migrants?
