Re: 6.3 quake reported in Christchurch?
Very sad news indeed! What caught my attention was the fact that the quake 5 months ago was stronger but the epicentre was well away from densely populated areas and therefore the damage was relatively limited. Today there was no such luck.
I hope NZ can overcome this catastrophe.

Have there been any indications on how long before Christchurch gets running again? Just thinking about rebooking my tickets.

The population has been asked to stay away from work and school for the forseeable, if you aren't on your way to help stay away (and tune into TV1...)

Even if you can get here then accommodation is going to become an issue with people who are homeless and all the rescue workers coming in. Can you contact the people at the place youll be visiting to see what they think?
Was talking to someone this morning who was in the centre yesterday and helping out today-very harrowing
Aftershocks still happening and just seen on TV that they think one of the damaged hotels may fall. It is so much worse when you know the places and have walked past them so many times.

Accommodation isn’t a problem but I wanted to wait until businesses reopen and things start to get back to normal.

I see. I don't know that anyone will know for certain and it depends where you are planning on going to. My area is fairly unscathed so some small shops are open and I think the big supermarket is as well. However they will possibly start to run out of stock. Who knows what will happen in the next few days, we are still getting quite strong aftershocks

A 75 member Los Angeles Urban Search and Rescue Team left tonight for NZ. They are earthquake specialists, doctors, engineers - have all kinds of specialized equipment - went to Haiti - not bringing the dogs because of your quarantine restrictions. Hope they are useful for you. All the best.

Have just managed to contact family in Christchurch. It appears my sister was in the CTV building. I'm feeling totally gutted. Just want to go home but wouldn't be able to get into Christchurch anyway. Keep praying that she was one of the fortunate few who were pulled out alive and that she is hospitalised somewhere and can't contact us.
