There was just an extra newsflash on TV and the breaking news banner says all phone lines in CHCH are down. Magniture confirmed to be 6.3, 10 km from ChCh, depth only 5 km. Apparently the cathedral has been damaged as well as other buildings too.

Thinking of you all there!!!

News says Cathedral destroyed and fair certaintty there will be deaths. All power and phones in Christchurch down so we probably won't get any news out of there directly for a while.

Thanks
I am still shaking now. That was one BIG scary aftershock. Home phone is working since I'm on the internet but work electricity and phones are off. As are the traffic lights on the way home [a 10mins drive]
I was at work when it happened, about to come home for dinner. Stuff fell off the shelves and the animals were terrified [apart from one young tom who was completely blase about the whole thing:)] One client's car moved forwards about 3 feet-she definitely had not parked on the garden:lol:
Luckily no real damage to our house but things have fallen off shelves again and stuff has moved.
Felt another 2 or 3 afterwards but seem to have quietened down for now.

I can cope with the smaller ones but this was too big- must be one of the biggest aftershocks we've had:frown: I'd have a stiff drink to calm down but I have to work later:sneaky:

According to Radio NZ, the tower of the cathedral has come away, but the cathedral is not destroyed. Epicentre was in Lyttleton, damage much worse than previous. Best wishes to all residents - Kia Kaha x

Yep - the first photos are appearing on the internet and I have to say the Cathedral looks in pretty bad shape although not completely destroyed.

On TV3 News so power in some areas but looks to be lots of building damage and the time of day means possibility of casualties is high :fingerscrossed:

The mayor has asked for the businesses in the city to evacuate and leave the city centre....

STUFF website appears to have gone down now. Here is an update from the Melbourne newspaper -

Nathan, a Melbourne surgeon attending a medical convention in Christchurch, said he had seen major destruction around the city following the quake, which was followed 5-10 minutes later by a strong aftershock.

He feared there would be fatalities, including at the cathedral in the main square where the steeple had been destroyed.

‘‘I’m over here at a convention in Christchurch and just in the middle of a session, you know, the speaker was speaking and suddenly the ground shook, and glass was breaking and it was really quite frightening,’’ Nathan told radio 3AW.

‘‘Fortunately nobody from our convention appears to be severely hurt but there’s a lot of major destruction here in Christchurch.’’

‘‘I don’t know if you know the church in the centre of town, the steeple has fallen over. I’m certainly fearful that there will be some fatalities amongst that, and a lot of the buildings just adjacent to the city square, the awnings of buildings have all fallen down and a lot of buildings around here, it looks pretty shaken up. All the water mains have burst. There’s water seeping up through the roads. It’s a fairly scary place to be right now.

‘‘The road has been buckled up, just like looking at bits of liquorice sort of burst up on the seam. It really is quite incredible.’’

He said buildings had fallen onto cars, while ‘‘lots of second storeys have fallen onto first storeys’’.

‘‘I guess a lot of us now don’t know what to do. Some of us were thinking to go down the hospital to help out but we were told not to leave the area because it’s not safe,’’ Nathan said.

The reports coming out are not good. Not good at all. There seems to be widespread destruction, people have most certainly been injured if not worse. Reports suggest people are trapped. Shakes are still happening.

Cell phone coverage appears to be sporadic at this time.

What can any of us say but that our thoughts are with the people of Christchurch and surrounds as they once again go through hell.

2pm news says there are bodies covered with blankets in a central mall. It sounds horrendous. Roads are rivers as a result of burst pipes and there have been many motoring collisions. People are trapped in a high rise where the stairs have collapsed below the 16th floor. Sounds way worse than the one in September probably due to the shallowness of this one. My thoughts are with those who are involved.
