Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up
#6241
Hi Trotty, great to hear from you. Love your updates but at this moment just sticking to the thread name issue.
What you say here is exactly what I think.
Also what you said in your earlier post, that we older folks have different issues.
Moderator Pollyana is looking into it.
My current suggestion to her is:
Over 40s, 50s, & 60s Moving Back and Catch-Up
Rodney, if we add "over 40s", no-one will think it's a reappearance of the old thread. So I think now there's no need to add "New" as you suggested? Plus we want to make it clear it's still the same community.
Anyone with strong objections should speak up now! I'm not the boss of the thread--just made a suggestion that, so far, several have agreed with. Others say they don't see a strong need to change, but they don't mind.
To summarise:
The current name with "chit-chat" in may put off newcomers who want to discuss serious concerns.
We don't want to put anyone off! But want to keep our sense of community, and our emphasis on the issues of older returnees.
Pollyana is looking into changing the name.
I currently suggest:
Over 40s,50s, & 60s Moving Back and Catch-Up

Bluntly..don't affect my security, keep the same name
Trotty I notice most of returnees have settle in Devon more than any other place.
Please note Islandwoman left Frome... To live in Dawlish Devon.
I don't know why they don't have a reunion down there.
Aries, easterner, Islandwoman to name a few are down there. High tide is in Devon also.
Feel free to correct me.
Cheers

Would it really be too security-shaking to have the thread called
Over 40s, 50s, & 60s Moving Back and Catch-up?
(Or, taking into account what dunrovin said,
Over 40s,50s, & 60s-plus Moving Back and Catch-Up ?
We can still recognise it as our thread.
Newcomers will not see it's not just trivial chit-chat.

I don't really think there is any need to give the thread a new title. I think there is a natural ebb and flow to all threads and eventually, most die a natural death (though this thread, and its earlier versions, are the longest thread I've seen on MBTTUK in 11 years on BE). I hope this one keeps going for a long time yet, butu if it doesn't c'est a vie - anyone can start a new thread with a new title if this thread is no longer felt to meet people's needs.
The thread was doing perfectly well and then because we have a slow day some people want to change the name, a slow day or weekend is nothing new, it happens, has it ever occurred to you that old posters wont be able to find us should they come looking.

I totally agree with You and John.

well of course if the majority want to keep the name, no problem.
Pollyana will take all these comments into account I'm sure.
I understand about the slowness being normal, but as I've said upthread, it just triggered me to suggest a name change, as I'd been thinking about the problems with this "chit-chat" name for a long time. After all, "chit-chat" became, when the original thread was closed, the new name. I never thought it was that good a name once it became the only "older returnees" community.
I'm not at all concerned former posters won't be able to find us.
It's new posters that are the concern. New would-be returnees in the older age bracket who might see the name "chit-chat" and think it's not the place for their serious concerns--but it IS!
But--whatever. It's a democracy! I just don't know how poor Pollyana will count the "votes."
I do think trotty's opinion--which concurs with mine and windsong's and I think a few others'-- that "chit-chat" might put new people off should have more weight, as she founded the thread.

Where shall we all go for a slap-up meal?
My UK pension is to be increased by one penny per week to 25p per week!
I shall not bother to advise Australia's Centrelink of my change in circumstances, the postage would probably take a year and a half of my increase.
As for the name of this thread, it needs to be shortened, perhaps to Over 40's Daily Catch-Up. We know it's a thread, so that word could also be discontinued. I am in my mid seventies but would not be concerned if the decades above 40 are not included in the title. Keep it simple.

Yes, Hoping to Move Back is a great name too, but will people realise it's the same thread as before, with the same community?
So if we give it a name like Hoping to Move Back, it would have to have a note alongside the name saying "formerly the over 50s and 60s ...." or something.
Hope trottytrue weighs in with her opinion.

Whatever we all decide to call it, it would be important to have a note along side the name to reflect that it was formally over 50's & 60's

Hi windsong, I personally think this would return us to the two-thread confusion of before. The whole BE forum is an expat community, seems to me, with many different threads. Our particular one is for older people with their particular problems.
And maybe you're right that web have more desire for community, too!

When the Chit-chat thread appeared, I had no idea it was many of the same people that were previously on the original Moving Back thread; and as the Moving Back thread went quiet, I simply missed a whole bunch of conversation because I didn't know where everyone had gone!

I don't know if Sue is still the right moderator for the thread, I'm not sure where to find out who's looking after which thread.

OK, I'm here
Long day at work but made it back eventually
I've also had a chat with Sue who said it was on her list to come and have a look at the name change stuff, but she has got rather a lot on her plate right now, so she has handed it over to me
So...... I can see the topic is being discussed long and hard, and I can see it from all sides really. There is an element of security in the familiarity of a name, however just like its the people that make a forum, its also the people that make a thread keep going, not the name itself. You guys have all built a fabulous community in here and no-one wants to destroy it by changing the status quo.
On the other hand, a new name might bring some new posters, specially if approached from a different angle - including the "moving back" phrase for instance.
Personally I like the "Old Farts, and the Young at Heart"
but I can appreciate that's not to everyone's taste. I also think Aries has made an excellent point

sorry, thats not a job I fancy taking on
But then after the change new posts will reflect the new title - unless they are quoting a post with the old title. You'll see what I mean when it actually happens, its not very easy to explain.
So I'm thinking perhaps "Over 40's Moving Back and Catching-Up"
Seems to be an amalgamation of several people's ideas; I won't change it yet, have a chat about what you think and I'll check back a bit later. And remember - it can always be changed again if it really doesn't work

A couple of you have mentioned that they would like a note kept referring to the original title. That will happen anyway for this reason. When we change a thread title, it will change the FIRST post in the thread. The other existing posts then retain the title that was in effect when they were posted unless every single one is changed individually
sorry, thats not a job I fancy taking on

I like this title - "Over 40's Moving Back and Catching-Up". I was actually thinking that 'over 40s" includes the 50s, 60s and above so no need to mention it. I think this title is more eye-catching for newcomers, too.
