There are plenty of people on this site who prefer here to the UK I would put money on that it is about 50/50.

We think that when my hubby retires we will have to go back as it is too expensive to live here. OK if you have a job, money, health care, good health, but once you start to need regular mediciations or have a major health problem that's when the sh*t hits the fan.

I have read that prescription drugs and healthcare are major US issues, In some ways you are lucky in that you and your husband can move between both the US and UK in retirement, as Heathcare must be a burden when you are retired (unless you have accumulated some decent wedge)....

Dear Dave (I think that was your name anyway! :) ). It's not that we don't all love the USA (please guys, I'm just trying to get a point across before you all send a lynch mob out for me! :p ) It's just that the majojority of us love Britain more. The reasons that we are all here in the first place are not all cut and dry, we all have diffferent stories and you could probably learn something from each and every one of us as we have all been through the same process (give or take a few details!). When you have people that would much rather live in Britain but for many reasons cannot return (too many to mention but think along the lines of obligations in the USA, monetary issues, etc.) it is hard to hear new guys on this forum that think that the life that we have would be so much better than their own (no offense meant! :) )
All we're saying is think about the life that you would be leaving behind before you try to jump into a new one. :)

Just start going to church here, there are plenty of fat divorced chicks there just waiting for any man with a dick and a job, hell you may not even need a job. + British accent they will be fighting over you. The only problem is listening to all that christian BS.

As with many people I'm very interested in moving over to the US. Right now it looks nigh on impossible, however, many of you have managed to do it, so it must be achievable.

In terms of career and education, currently involved with Marketing/Sales of IT products, approx 10 years experience in business since Uni.

From my research, the only method I can realistically see an an option is for a US employer to employ me.....so advice from any of you out there that have went down this road is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

Welcome to BE!

I take it you've read the sticky post at the top of this forum about legal routes to immigrating to the US.

If you think H-1B is your route, you'd better be really, really talented and successful in sales and marketing. Also, I may be mistaken but if you want an H-1B, your degree better be related to marketing or sales otherwise give up on that route right now.

You might want to ask yourself why you want to live and work in the US? If you think life in the UK is bad, life in the US is not a bed of roses by any means.

Have you traveled much in the US? Any regions, states or cities take your fancy?

The thing that makes this so funny is that its probably quite true. :D

How long you been over there for?

Haha, yeah 80's in Colorado about this time of year maybe, and nice summers too... But speaking from experience their winters are hell on earth IMO. :p

I think how you like this place depends a lot on attitude. I've lived in both CO for about a year, and CA now for about 4 1/2 months. I think for me, the first time I was over was rocky, it was to study and whilst I enjoyed it I was also looking forward to coming home for lots of reasons. I doubt with that sort of 'grounding' I'd be enjoying it in CA as much as I am now.

Yep, me! Whilst I guess you're trying to balance out the overwhelmingly negative opinions here (meh, that's just something that comes with the territory of Limeys)...

It is an enormous culture shock. Suggest you read back through the threads for about a month or so, that should give you a reasonable insight to how Brits really feel about everyday life here.
...It's worth your while to do this.

Hi NC - I did review the sticky. My degree is business and marketing, am I good in my job? Subjective question.....not going to say that I'm am crap, then again, not going to say that I'm the best either :)

I don't dislike live in the UK, I've got a good standard of living, I hate the weather though...the pissing rain, does become rather tiresome..

Spend some time travelling though US whilst at Uni and I've been to a few cities on business - do I know what it's like to live in the US? Can't say that I do, however, I'd like to give it a go.

Having moved around a bit since Uni, live is not easy when you move away, however, whether I am in Northampton. London,. Manchester or Newcastle - whilst not the same as moving to the US, there are some parallels, in that you have to make new friends etc.

Being an avid golfer, I would prefer the Southern states, one would have to go where the job was though...

Living in the Springs its not nearly as bad as just two hours north although its been a mild winter from all accounts, snow one day then hot and sunny the next.

Well if you do get over here you can forget the Cuban Cigars - possession of them will get you arrested. Not that they are not available - so I am told.

It's kind of weird, you can get straight in if you are a Cuban "refugee" but not if you are a Cuban cigar.

As others have said - either get your company to transfer you here or marry a Yank, or make so much money you can buy a business here and employ Yanks.

We're doing very nicely thank you. But we are hardly typical. And having 3 at college doesn't help

On my part, not being allowed to work for nearly 4 years didn't help me assimilate
