Newbie

Hi Guys,

just registered for the site and I had a quick review of the site.

As with many people I'm very interested in moving over to the US. Right now it looks nigh on impossible, however, many of you have managed to do it, so it must be achievable.

In terms of career and education, currently involved with Marketing/Sales of IT products, approx 10 years experience in business since Uni.

From my research, the only method I can realistically see an an option is for a US employer to employ me.....so advice from any of you out there that have went down this road is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

Welcome to the site :)

As for ways into the US, there's a good article in the articles section of the ways in, sounds like your interested in H1B...well just hunt for a job like any other job and if someone is interested they'll sponsor you, but baring in mind it ain't cheap, and won't get a visa till Oct if you found a sponsor that gets you before the quota is reached and you can understand why you need niche skills being IT as one of those dime a dozen fields...

Actually your best chance is to get your current employer to transfer you or for you to marry a yank.
Simply cold-calling perspective US employers will get you nowhere fast.

Enjoy the site, and good luck :)

Current employer is California based..... they are not playing the game though, as the only guys who can transfer intercompany are execs..... even offered to pay for the fees

The marry the yank thing - is that how many brits get over there?

Cheers,

Dave

Why?

What are you hoping to get that you cannot get in Blighty?

I hope you're not suffering from grass-is-greener syndrome...

;)

PS: Are you familiar with US employment laws and labor practises? Healthcare, typical holiday (sorry: vacation) entitlements, welfare benefits (or absence thereof :scared: )

Yeah, for a H1B you want to get a move-on... The window last year closed at the beginning of August. AFAIK the numbers haven't changed, so I'd suspect it'd be around the same time, maybe earlier that they run out.

If you leave it late and don't manage to secure employment until after they run out, you'll have to wait until October 2007 to start... You'd be lucky to find an employer that'd be okay with that!

But yeah, niche is what you want to go for. If your experience is marketing something specific, start with the companies in the US that would directly benefit from your experience in the same sector. Going for some kind of 'generic' position that's kind of ballpark, is probably not going to yield anywhere near as good results.

pretty much, it's the easiest of the not so easy routes.

definitely have a look through some old threads because unless you luck out, the US isn't always what it cracks out to be...as in shite holiday entitlement, really expensive medical insurance, it ain't cheaper running a car here, credit is also a problem for a couple years/....

If you are in the IT field, the job market in that sector in the US is flooded with unemployed.
Actually there are plenty of $8-10 hr jobs in California but good luck eating.

Grass is what you make it.... I am aware of the employment laws and holidays...with regards to welfare (I would get very little in the UK - Govt not likely to pay my mortgage :-)

For me its about taking the good stuff - as well as the bad.... :)

Yes but if fall on hard times in this country you are ****ed, it is social darwinism here. And those hard times could just be someone gets sick that's all, no laziness, drugs, boozing, gambling and all that. Believe me I am living that American nightmare.

M & S ready meals is what I miss the most about the UK. :

Heinz baked beans (the proper ones) are fairly easy to find in many supermarkets usually with the International foods.

And what do you think will happen to you here if you can't pay your mortgage.

Did you know the chief cause of bancruptcy in the US is medical bills?

Last time I checked Healthcare free at the point of delivery was still available inthe UK.

And housing benefit. And disability whatsit. And Jobseekers allowance. Etc.

OMG you have no idea...

If you go the the ER here the first thing they ask for is how are you paying. Prescription medications are extremely expensive. Even with expensive healthcare insurance you usually have a co-pay for each visit.

I think I am correct in saying that in most states if you fall behind with one mortgage payment your property can be foreclosed.

I missed my life, the day to day everyday things that I had been used to all my life. Pure and simple as that.

To answer your other question I have been here for 10yrs.
