Sadly people are uneducated and with moral conviction or mutual respect, and so cannot see the value of our argument.

It's quite common in NZ...and knowingly accepted as friendly banter insults.....but most NZers would not have heard of muppet as an 'insult'.

Look at 'bugger'....the meaning is quite harsh but at the same time it's quite acceptable as a 'tsk' word.

As several other posters have said, its meant as a slightly patronising slap on the wrist. Its not offensive, and its meant to imply that you have done something daft.

No - its meant to point out to the person that they have done something daft, and that they should have known better.

I think it's one of these things that is more offensive when written down. I'm sure the word muppet said to your face would barely register.
