Ok, thanks. Why did they stop the Golden goals?

Anyone else have any comments or suggestions about this (I already put the functions into a spreadsheet when I was thinking about it the other night and it's easy enough to modify to whatever preference we pick)?

If it were up to me - after extra time I'd take the goalies off and then play another two 5 minute 'halves' - repeat until somebody wins. |

I've no problem with any of the systems really although I prefer the original way. Full details here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_goal |

The golden goal just ended up with 0-0 extra time results as everyone played really defensively.

Thats right about the Golden Goal. Better just to pay two periods of extra time.

Then we'd never have a penalty shoot out, which I have to admit I enjoy watching (as long as it's not England vs Germany.... or anyone else actually).

Re: World Cup
they could start the extra time with 10 aside and after every 5 minutes both teams lose a player and so on until a goal is scored.

Re: World Cup
The way I intended it is, if someone predicts a draw it's only valid at the end of extra time. Say, if you predict 0-0, and at the end of extra time it's a draw: you'll earn a point (or 3 if it's exact, i.e. 0-0), irrespective of the penalty result.
OTH, if someone wants to make a penalty "win" prediction, they have to add a "penalties" signifier on the end of the prediction. It's basically an opportunity to gamble for some extra points that can only be gained when the team they pick wins a penalty shoot-out. Predicting a draw but putting in the "penalty" signifier would give 0 points. If anyone does this, I'm sure someone will quickly point out they need to correct it  So, there are three options for each prediction, e.g.:- Brazil 3 England 0 (a win in 90 mins or extra time only) Result:1pt, Score:3pts Brazil 0 England 0 (a draw after extra time only) Result:1pt, Score:3pts Brazil 5 England 4 PENS (a penalties result only) Result:2pts, Score:5pts

Actually thinking about this you shouldn't restrict penalty predictions to just those who predict a draw. Otherwise those who predict draws have the potential to get lots more points than those who don't; which makes the system open to being gamed. i.e. predicting 0-0 draws and penalty wins will probably do quite well on average.

Feel free to email or pm me in advance, if you do get the opportunity. I'm sure the mods won't ban me for quoting such messages
I'm thinking we also need to have some sort of secrecy for predictions on the last day of the group stage. Perhaps everyone can pm me with theirs and I'll pm someone with mine, then the lot can be posted together... or something

That sounds fine to me GH. I may not enter though because my interenet access after next Tuesday will be intermittent.

Re: World Cup
Ok...
So, same as before, PLUS there's now also the PENALTY score option. If you want to predict the penalty score, simply add the word "PENS" on the end of your prediction. Better?
