North Americans in general (both Canadians and Americans) prefer and encourage a positive outlook on life. So even if there's bad times you find a way of coping and getting by.
North Americans will usually avoid whiners and complainers so it doesn't help in making friends and building networks.

I really dont think this forum is significantly different to how it was 5 years ago, people come and go, but the overall feel is about the same.
What changes is peoples perception and use of it I suspect, going from fear of the unknown, to optimism about a new experience, to the excitement of finally getting here, and them the realisation that much of day to day living is the same. Then there are the other bumps along the road that can happen wherever you live, changes in your personal circumstances, all of which will alter how you see things.
I agree with FMs comment earlier, personal attacks just because you dont agree with someone (or for any other reason) are totally unacceptable. I get tired of the constant sniping from the peanut gallery too, but there is only so much we can do. All I would say is if you see something offensive and out of line, report the post {! button}, that will bring it to the attention of the mod team, especially over the holiday season when its less likely the mods will see it for themselves.

Personal interpretation again, paranoia etc

what you see as personal attack I may see as just giving someone a shake or a wake up call and visa versa

Bullies and petty people...if some one posts an incorrect piece of info, let it go why start acting like a know it all and then intimidating other posters...to go on the advice of a internet forum is silly to begin with...you should always double check with the embassy or a lawyer...also there are a number of bum chums on here who gladly hijack genuine posters threads and start acting stupid and the original poster never gets the answers they need or someone gets attacked for no reason and the post goes off track and becomes rubbish...
I used to like posting on the site but am not really into it anymore as more and more people are just getting more and more petty....and i cant be bothered to deal with people attacking me or anyone else for that matter for no real reason...

Its how its done that matters. I have no problem with challenging preconceptions, misinformation or rose tinted views, but I (try) not to be personal about it or hurt anyones feelings.

Like I said it IS down to perception, and that depends where YOU are at that moment in TIME (thats all of us, posters/respondents/mods).
As Mrs Miggins said the amount of Canada Vs UK threads is getting VERY tedious at the moment. As is the number of I hate Canada/Canada Hates me posts. HOWEVER I realise that the feelings of isolation etc ARE amplified during the (supposedly) festive season so (for today at least) maybe I will 'kinder'

I find the forum to be cliquey. Some people on here are very friendly and helpful, but I get so tired of the smart ass remarks made by a few on here. Sometimes I feel that if your opinion isnt theirs then you will get, a lot of sarcastic and hurtful comments hurled at you.
Just my humble opinion.

99% of us CAN BE friendly and helpful (yes you do have to sort the chaff that we ALL post I agree), I agree there's a lot of smart ass remarks and 'in' humour but thats a fact of life anywhere. As for being made by a few? I would be hard pressed to find ANY poster who comes on the main forum or maple leaf who has NOT at one point or another 'resorted' to sarcasm or personal attack.
Also just MHO

There are at least three or four regular posters whos first instict (and majority of their posts) seems to be to post something, anything "funny" regardless of whether its relevant to the original thread or likely to offend the person who started it. Its a shame because when they do contribute something with some insight it tends to be lost in all the noise anyway...
Frankly I find it annoying and distracting sometimes, but as far as I can tell its not against any rules, unless they really get offensive...

The issue I've seen on here lately is there are too many flippant, sarcastic and nonsensical comments. Some people seem to be pathologically unable to offer anything except failed attempts at humour and jokes, when what others need is practical and supportive advice. I suspect these are the same people who were the failed class clown at school. It's not on, I for one am glad I moved to a country where this silly jesting type of interaction is not customary or acceptable.
Apparently, she beside herself with worry mainly because of the amount of children. I believe that she had a hard time making things meet as the price of food is high here. I last time I saw her, she said that the kids were now on a wheat free diet, mainly eating soup. There were allegations of physical abuse but I believe bedtimes weren't an issue. Hope this helps"
I'm confused!

Very funny editing my quotes. The funny thing about this is that I wouldn't have to edit any quotes of your posts to make you appear stupid.
Really?
you got that right
with the attitude you SEEM to have and the massive chip you APPEAR to have on your shoulder I cant say I'm suprised
Unfortunately Alan. Bodger insists on making it our problem too
Sadly it doesnt make you any less annoying
A sign of a massive ego perhaps
and egotistical? as if anyone cares that you're putting them on your ignore list??
But I do use my real name, btw how many people from here have you ACTUALLY physically met? I'm prepared to bet that Novo, dbd, annm, MMC and myself have all met a very similar number (if not more)
I do, but nobody wants my kidney
Seriously!!!
I have respect for you and the advice you offer, BUT to claim you have expert knowledge outside of your own city/board let alone province is going a wee bit far
