If there is a big chunk of society that will never see any good in you, or give you credit for anything you do, then that chunk of society has rendered itself largely irrelevant, at least until the next election.
What's the point in trying to placate someone if there's no chance of it working?
Had he thrown himself into it and tried to make a success, I genuinely believe that he might have been able to garner approval, but he didn't. He has access to the best advice in the world, from experienced career politicians, but he has surrounded himself with a series of grandstanders, and has done nothing but attempt to poke a stick in the bears cage.
He has brought this approbrium down upon his own head...he never tries to placate anyone, he shocks his own staff as they don't know what he's going to come out with next, and as for his tweets

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at.
What's he done that deserves credit? Have you ever known a political leader so badly thought of? Even Reagan wasn't like this. Has there ever been anyone who has lost so many of his appointments, so soon?
He might (still) be popular with a few supporters but they can't point to anything good except to say "he's different" and they're not wrong about that.
There's an old line about at least Hitler/Mussolini got the trains to run on time. I don't see anyone saying "at least..." in Trump's case.
Who is Trump trying to placate?

My Father-in-Law can't stand me, especially since I took his daughter half way round the world. I've tried in the past to win him over, but nothing worked, so I've stopped bothering.
Trump's biggest fault as far as I can see is that he has the attitude of a 14 year old who has never been told 'no'. I don't think he's evil, I just think he is a woefully inadequate human being who has zero empathy.

I think there were a large number of people who were evidently surprised by the election, it was a sort of Brexit Mark II, but I don't think the whole world came out gunning for him.

My German half says just tell him the Secret Service budget has run out and from now on he has to ride in an open car with no protection, and wearing one of those red hats.

Look at last week with the Charlottesville thing. After much criticism about the way he apportioned blame, he eventually came around with the condemnation that people wanted to hear. If he'd left it at that and maybe reinforced it later there's a chance people might have started thinking "Hey, he's finally listened to some advice and taken it on board."
But no, he went back on it to say the stuff he got slated for the first time.

This an easy version of chicken and egg though. The criticism is there for a reason. He could still win people over but he can't resist himself.

Well that's understandable...you stopping trying I mean but you would still hope that others would like you. Trump doesn't seem to have that concern.

On the last bit, as I fast approach 50 I find myself less and less outgoing and preferring just my own company more and more, a bonafide miserable old git if you will haha

To me his only redeeming feature is that he wears his heart on his sleeve, he doesn't have a public and private persona, or the intelligence to carry it off. He's a dick pretty much 100% of the time haha.

I'd love to know what world leaders say privately among themselves and whether they try to have a "quiet word" with his people behind the scenes.
I mean we heard what Merkel had to say when "explaining" something to him (that should not have needed explaining) and we saw him push the MP of Montenegro out of the way at a meeting.
All that's in public, just imagine what could be said in private.

Says not available in my country... but this isn't bad if you have 15 minutes.
