Now he's just a crazy old man saying offensive things for the sake of being offensive, the government should work around him and the rest of the world should ignore him.

No war involving North Korea; the best one could have hoped for.

The war never ended, it's in a state of truce. Just thought I'd pick a little nit there.

"No active war" then or "no open hostilities" "a lid kept".

The next New Yorker cover, while not about North Korea, is a brilliant portrayal of Trump.

Not just the New Yorker, there are a bunch (I should say , a few) magazines lampooning him. Good to see!

Though I'm no fan, I do wonder what credit the man would get if he were responsible for doing something great for America, or even the world. I suspect someone else would get the credit for any good bits, whether deserved or not..

He gets all manner of credit for reducing immigration to the US, what more do you want?

There's no left wing in America. If he did something that was what Jeremy Corbyn wanted it'd be by accident so, no, I wouldn't expect him to get credit. What sort of thing do you have in mind?

Nothing particular in mind, but you've answered my question.

If there is a big chunk of society that will never see any good in you, or give you credit for anything you do, then that chunk of society has rendered itself largely irrelevant, at least until the next election.

What's the point in trying to placate someone if there's no chance of it working?

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at.

What's he done that deserves credit? Have you ever known a political leader so badly thought of? Even Reagan wasn't like this. Has there ever been anyone who has lost so many of his appointments, so soon?
He might (still) be popular with a few supporters but they can't point to anything good except to say "he's different" and they're not wrong about that.
There's an old line about at least Hitler/Mussolini got the trains to run on time. I don't see anyone saying "at least..." in Trump's case.

What's the point in trying to placate someone if there's no chance of it working?
Who is Trump trying to placate?

It's always going to be the case that there are some groups the President cannot please. Obama, for example, would never be able to please Trump and his supporters because he's black, that wasn't the fault of Obama but of the Trumpists for taking such an extreme position. Similarly, Trump will never woo the far right in the US because his daughter has been married to a Jew, neither Trump can undo that now.

Trump is personally a boorish pig so he'll always be regarded in the same light as R. Kelly or Jimmy Savile, he'll never be well regarded personally. This contrasts with, for example, Jimmy Carter, widely thought to have been a poor President but a great man. Trump might achieve "asshole but effective" if he was prepared to address the concerns of a wider audience, to placate, as you put it, but he's not going to.

Politically, it's not the easily offended fringe that's the concern with Trump but the alienation of the moderate right. Because he's pissed off even the likes of McConnell and Ryan he cannot get very much done. Some of his destructive policies are having an impact, American cities will flood more often thanks to his rescinding climate change support funding to them, but the major ones; the wall, expanding foreign wars, taxing the poor for the benefit of the rich, the promotion of ill heath and untended injuries, are like to remain unimplemented until he's ousted.

I suspect the signature achievement of his term thus far, a reduction in immigration, was not the result of policy, nor even of bluster, but simple a consequence of no one wanting to be in the same country as him.
