Glad he's going to Manure as he's crap now. Too old and injury prone. He's talent was his pace and now that's gone. He'll sit on the bench or play in Carling Cup and collect his wages.

The daily mail says "It is believed Owen could be offered as little as £20,000 a week as a basic salary but with massive performance-related bonuses which could take him close to the £110,000 a week he was on at Newcastle United. "

Hopefully this will force him into a better fitness regime, e.g. jog to the bookies instead of drive.

His talent was also his clinical finishing, there are lots of fast players (Walcott for example), but few have a 50% conversion rate.

IF he stays fit, and IF he gets much in the way of starts, and IF SAF sets up the team to make chances for him, then he could turn out to be a great bargain for them. But thats quite a few IFs. I too suspect he will spend more time on the bench than off it, and Rooney cant be all that happy that yet again he wont be playing up front, but at a minimum Owen brings a lot of experience with him for all the players who are actually under 26 as the transfer policy is supposed to dictate at old trafford...

If you think about Man U last year they were certainly guilty of not converting there chances, so if he stays fit, (and I see no reason why not having read the glossy brouchure:D) then he will certainly improve that area of performance, but at what cost to the team structure I wonder.

I think it basically came down to cost. Tevez's agent wanted more than Fergie was prepared to pay, and Owen's a freebie. Even if Owen does sit on the bench, he'll be sitting there for less money than Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov, etc.

His conversion rate is worth the punt that Fergie is having.

His conversion rate at Newcastle actually takes some believing given the service he got.

His Spanish wasn't good enough for a return to the Scousers anyway.....:)

Dead right. Too many forget he lost the pace after injury some years ago, but obviously compensated for it in other ways. That's a sign of a good player.

He has maintained pretty much a goal a game until the last season when playing in a team that did poorly; notice they didn't get relegated in the other seasons.

During the last season, I think I'm right in saying, he had more injury interruptions than usual and there were several changes of coaching/managerial personnel so tactics and selection policy would have kept changing too. All good reasons for nobody being able to be at their best even with a run of consecutive games to aid fitness and confidence.

He's had criticism thrown at him about a lack of pace and he has continued to score goals at a better rate than most. It was less than two years ago that he made a comeback in a poorly performing England team and promptly scored a couple of goals against the Russian team that so impressed at the Euros last year.

He wouldn't be the first player to put injury problems behind him and at ManU there will not be the pressure to get him fit from whatever strains he may have in the future.

I don't see Rooney being disappointed. They were both extremely productive for each other as well as the team when they both played for England. Remember that Rooney's pre-WC2006 injury and then Owen's, the moment Rooney was fit enough to start, was where it all started to go wrong for England.
