Things that make you feel old

A school classmate of mine has just posted on Facebook that the goalkeeper of the football team we used to go and watch each week has turned 70 years old.

Somebody in the EPL thread in the locker room mentioned about players today could they handle playing with an actual leather football aka a casey from where I am from with actual leather lace up area.

A "tub" where I grew up. I never played with a lace up, goodness me how old are you?!!! You might be in the same age group as the goalie I watched as a schoolboy!!!

Oh still a few years to go before reaching that age.

Seeing same model of car as my first car, a 1964 Singer Gazelle, featured as a 'classic' on the web....I bought mine in 1969.I ran it for a couple of years till it rotted out beneath me.

And rebellious rock stars of our youth

Mick Jagger 74, Elton nearly 70 and wanting to have time with his kids, Roger Daltrey 73.....

Sorry Bristol but they were too old even when I was a lad.

Hamish McAlpine though??? He was the Dundee United goalkeeper when I was a young lad on the terraces every week. Brilliant character, still a big presence in the local area, and now to discover that guy I cheered as a schoolboy is 70.... oh Lordy.

Don't know why this is a shock, my parents are in their 70s but I obviously don't accept that I myself am not too far off a half-century.

Getting old is crap.

Wait till you're in your 60's and all your friends start dropping like flies; in most of my stories now all the people are dead.

Not familiar with that.

The term, yes, the act of 'posting' not.

Does that give my age away?

When I was at school we had to play with leather lace-ups, non-plasticised obviously, and these things were potentially lethal. I recall one soggy autumnal afternoon late on in the day, the ball had had ample opportunity to absorb just about everything in the entire county. No-one was interested in playing, but we had to. At some point our side won a corner; the poor sod who was sentenced to take it almost broke his ankle in the process, but managed to loft it goal-wards. Nobody went up for the header; the bombastic sports master screamed at us all.

One guy replied "Are you mad?"

"WHAT DID YOU SAY BOY?"

"Sorry, are you mad SIR?"

"DETENTION!"

Happy days.

Absolutely, especially if they weren't inflated well. Any underinflation and a fair proportion of whatever kinetic energy the ball had acquired in dislocating the kicker's ankle would break the neck of anyone foolish enough to stick their head in the way or simply not paying attention, and double the casualty rate if the ball was wet which was nearly all the time.

1. Jings...you must be a young-un Dundonian then. When I watched football in inclement weather (silly me) in Dens Park, across the street from United's Tannadice Park... Dundee F.C., not United, was the premier team.
I also used to take the overnight train with Dick McTaggart back to RAF Halton where we both served in the RAF...he washed dishes in the mess and I was an Apprentice.

2. That is so right...no matter at what age!

You don't need to be old to feel old.

I well remember revisiting my university town in my late twenties and feeling very old indeed.

It's the young doing those silly things that you once did and now understand how silly they were that make you feel old.

This was #1 when I was 16. Great song...and in the spirit of things that make you feel old this song is much much better than the drivel in the charts these days.

At the same time as I was watching Hamish McAlpine from the terraces, my girlfriend was doing ju-jitsu lessons at the Dick McTaggart Sports Centre on South Road :rofl: I just checked and he's still alive, age 82.

Looking at number ones on my 16th birthday - US and UK - and 17th and 18th (desperate to find something half decent) shows why I had little interest in singles.

Albums was where it was at, man.

Just had a look at UK #1 album when I turned 16 and it was Roxy Music - Flesh and Blood which I bought a copy of at the time and then bought again on CD.

Looking through 1980 there was some real dirge on the album chart #1's...Johnny Mathis, Rose Royce,

Interesting that many use sports or music as reference points. It's some years ago, but I do remember going into Virgin Records on Oxford Street and seeing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album being promoted as 25th anniversary! I was like, WTF ! ...and that was a few years ago in itself.

Having said that, I think once you hit mid/late 40's you don't feel like you're getting any older. it becomes just a number.

Awesome! Loved that track, back in the day. Did you know Heather Small (M People) did the vocals...I didn't find that out until recently, but once you know, her voice is so distinct.

I never knew Heather Small did vocals on that track! But now I know it seems obvious.... that song reminds me of the start of my clubbing days. Ah good times!

I just checked out what was UK No1 when I turned 16.....Lady in Red by Chris DeBurgh... lol!! That makes me feel absolutely ancient!!

I had no idea but I can definitely tell now you told me.

I used to like M People, my favourite TV ad at that time was for the Peugeot 406 as it had their 'search for the hero' song playing.

I remember that well.

Its funny after you have been in Canada for a while, you forget about the bands and songs that were once such regular listening.... and its such a blast from the past when you do hear one......

If you have a look at the CARP website there's some pharmacies that might be 50 for the discount. I'm joining as soon as possible. Only catch is that I need a Canadian address.

Looks interesting, thanks. They don't seem to be in NB, but I do qualify for the 55+ discounts at Lawtons.
